(1939 - 2008), of Loving v. Virginia — the court case that ruled it unconstitutional to make mixed-racial marriage illegal, is such an inspiration to all folks who are/have had to fight for respect in their relationships. Particularly as a black woman in the late 50s/early 60s, she really allowed herself to be vulnerable to so much hate and harm for the sake of equality, human rights, and love 💗

(1817 -1876) was the first Black woman to perform at Buckingham Palace. Her American mainstream White critics and audiences were so shocked at the beauty and quality of her performances that they publicly questioned what it could mean for a Black woman to sing as beautifully as the White sopranos they were used to seeing perform.

Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), born Isabella Baumfree, was an activist for the rights of African Americans and women. She was born into slavery in New York and her first language was Dutch. She escaped from slavery in 1826. She changed her name in 1843 to Sojourner Truth and set off to travel and preach about the abolition of slavery. She is most famous for her 1851 speech, "Ain't I a Woman?" which was delivered at a women's suffrage conference in Ohio. She gave the speech in response to white women who did not want the women's suffrage movement mixed with abolition.

Although the term did not exist at the time, we could call her a pioneer of the concept of intersectionality. Nell Irvin Painter wrote, "At a time when most Americans thought of slaves as male and women as white, [Sojourner] Truth embodied a fact that still bears repeating: Among the blacks are women; among the women, there are blacks."

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) worked as the principle organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the standing point for where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream Speech". He was an activist for civil rights and gay rights, nonviolence, and socialism. He did/does not get enough credit for all of his hard work as he was often having to fight from "behind the scenes" due to his intersectionalities of being a gay man of color.
