COMPOST DAY #8

How do we imagine our Angewandte garden?

How would we like to cultivate the Angewandte garden and share the space around the compost heap? What would we like to grow?
Compost Day #8 is an opportunity for anyone at Angewandte, interested to reflect on how we imagine the garden in the yard at Oskar Kokoschka Platz.
We will collect and exchange ideas for future planting in the compost garden.
We invite all Angewandte students and staff to join!
practical garden tour with Sigrid Gerl (Kleine Stadtfarm), participatory inputs welcome from all!

looking back at compost day #7

last friday we did some spring composting and gardening and had some snacks in the yard 🌱
with we looked at what is growing in the garden at the moment and after turning over the compost and meeting some of the working worms, we planted rosemary, thyme, strawberries, salvia, coriander, parsley and some salad in the raised beds 🌿🪱
we ended this sunny session with a picnic and enjoyed some garden pesto out of the herbs we found together 🍃

COMPOST DAY #7

join us for spring composting/gardening next friday 🌱🪱

date: Friday, April 17, 2026
time:  2 to 5pm

location: Compost garden, yard of Angewandte, Oskar Kokoschka Platz 2, 1010 Vienna

It’s time to again take care of our compost heap and the surrounding garden! Together with Kleine Stadtfarm gardener Sigrid Gerl, we will get in touch with soil, worms, trees and herbs: touch and move the compost around so it can breathe again, re-plant fruit trees, gather nettles and linden tree leaves for tea and pesto, renew the high bed, plant herbs, seed salads, and many more things. As always, we learn from one another, listening to plants and their/our stories.
Bring your compost matter!

This compost session is for all to join! And it is free!

We share a recap of our spring gardening session at Kleine Stadtfarm, where we foraged for ingredients to make a special recipe that Sigrid generously shared with us. After the collective meal, we held a seed exchange, sharing stories about the seeds’ heritage and cultivation, and how they found their way to us.
The event also marked the start of an Erasmus+ collaboration with .foresta.rovereto , a community space and garden in Rovereto, Italy. Our Erasmus+ project, which focuses on critical and intersectional ecological practices and the use of composting as an artistic method, carries the name co_matters.

We share a recap of our spring compost gardening event, hosted by members of the Cultural Hybrid Collective .elaiza.live . We worked with clay excavated from the city’s layers and shared stories about insects and community building.
Photo descriptions: As usual, we began with a collective welcoming ritual at our compost heap. Afterwards, we moved to the studio of Klasse für Alle, where we warmed up, ate, and reflected on conviviality with insects - especially bees - and the hardships they face in urban spaces. We contextualized the anthropocentric and colonial histories of insect houses, before finally starting to (de)form some clay excavated at Karlsplatz during the construction of Vienna’s metro infrastructure.

Our Erasmus+ project, which focuses on critical and intersectional ecological practices and the use of composting as an artistic method, carries the name co_matters.
We ended the day with a collective dialogue about community building, art and ecologies at

✨SPRING COMPOSTING✨

The sprouts are emerging from the soil, as are the compost days.
We will care for the compost heap and the surrounding garden, guided by (Kleine Stadtfarm) gardener Sigrid Gerl, in the morning (starting 11 am).
Members of the Cultural Hybrid Collective, from the recent (re)member exhibition, are facilitating a workshop in which we are (de)forming clay excavated from the layers of the city we inhabit. Residues of the city’s growing infrastructures are brought up again, into another cycle of life above the ground.
In this compost session we are crafting space to reflect upon building community and continuity, to touch soil and memory, and to connect with the circularity of matter and seasons.

✨Introducing the Klasse für Alle course of the summer semester 2026✨

ART & ECOLOGY, ART & COMMUNITY is a course for students and non-students, who want to plan and implement projects with children, teenagers, and young adults as part of Klasse für Alle. (e.g., in collaborative projects with middle schools, programs such as Hobby Lobby, in cooperation with AGIDS, and with associations that work with refugees.) In Klasse für Alle, we combine ecological, social, political, anti-colonial, and subversive practices to form our artistic participatory methods.

We will ask fundamental questions about “art & ecology” and “art & community” and reflect on them: What do terms such as participation, authorship, and agency mean? What does diversity mean within and outside institutions? How do we find a language that is understandable? How do we talk to children and young people? Who do we want to reach? What role does art play in this?

In the first meeting, we will introduce ourselves to each other with our ideas, projects, and wishes and, based on this, figure out what the group needs. Possibilities for further work include: Project presentations & group feedback; Learning about methods and tools for working with groups and trying them out together; Reading of pivotal texts (by bell hooks, Paulo Freire, Stefano Harney/Fred Moten, Carmen Mörsch); Excursions and Compost Days, into which projects can be embedded.
