Dear Students,

The Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) cordially invites you to the international conference:

Comparison as Method and Heuristic in Communication Research
International Conference at the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC)
23–24 September 2026 | Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna

The conference provides a platform to examine the role of comparison in media and communication research – as a methodological approach, an analytical perspective and a heuristic principle for understanding complex media dynamics. Against the backdrop of technological transformation, global shifts, and methodological innovation, the conference brings together scholars to explore the role and relevance of comparison in contemporary media and communication research.

The conference will address, among others, the following themes:
• Innovations in comparative communication research
• Methodological reflection and critique
• Making use of comparative results in academic and societal contexts

We are particularly pleased to welcome a range of distinguished international scholars and speakers, including Professor Robin Mansell and look forward to an engaging exchange of ideas and perspectives.

We kindly ask you to register for the conference by 16 September 2026 at the latest:
