Here's the mistake: candidates without local experience spend the interview explaining what they don't have. Flip it. Employers aren't really testing "have you worked in Australia," they're testing "can you learn our systems fast and think clearly under pressure." Your degree already answers that, you just haven't packaged it.

Take one real project. Say you built a database system for a university assignment. Don't describe the subject, describe the problem: "The brief was to design a system that could handle 10,000 records without slowing down. I hit a wall with query speed in week two, redesigned the indexing, and got it under two seconds." That's a story about problem-solving under a deadline, and it lands the same whether it happened in Sydney or Seoul.

Then connect it forward: "That's the kind of problem I want to keep solving, which is why I'm doing a Professional Year internship, so I can apply it in an Australian workplace." One sentence, no more. You've turned a perceived weakness into a specific, memorable answer. Practice it out loud until you can say it in under 90 seconds without sounding rehearsed. Confidence in the story matters more than perfect grammar.

A follow-up email is not about gratitude. It is a second chance to show you were paying attention.

Send it within 24 hours. Keep it short. Three things only.

First: reference something specific from the conversation. "Your point about the team's shift to microservices resonated with me" is much better than a generic opener.

Second: address something you could have answered better. If you stumbled on a question, this is your chance to add what you should have said. It shows self-awareness and follow-through.

Third: confirm your interest. One clear sentence. Say you want the role and why it fits where you are headed.

Most candidates skip this. You should not.

Nearly 30 years across Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta. That's the experience Amit Chopra brought to our community earlier this month.

Around 250 people from PE joined "A Tech Career in the Age of AI" for two hours covering what makes Big Tech different, how to navigate career choices in Big Tech, startups or beyond, and why fundamentals and communication still matter more than anything else.

The Q&A ran long because the questions kept coming. That's what a genuinely engaged community looks like.
