Early career researchers are welcome to attend the forthcoming Entrepreneurship Explained workshops, in both Townsville and Cairns. Townsville is up first and involves two sessions that will introduce you to the JCU Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Mr Dean Alle, who will share some of the secrets of entrepreneurship. The workshops highlight working life in a world empowered by entrepreneurs and disruptive technology.
These interactive workshops will help participants become “entrepreneur ready” and discover what this means for potential careers. Ideally, participants should attend both workshops, however it will be possible to attend one or the other.
The workshops will be fast-paced and high energy, with scenarios, role-plays and other forms of interactivity. The first is titled Entrepreneurship Unplugged and will be held on 9 May in Townsville. The second is Lean Agile Design Thinking Startups and will be held on 30 May. Details for Cairns are being worked out, but the corresponding sessions are likely to be held on 12 and 13 June - stay tuned for further details. New seminar!
Early Career Researchers who are interested in understanding peer reviewing are invited to attend a panel discussion on 29 May between 1pm and 2pm. The discussion will provide insights into the process of peer reviewing for scholarly journals, to help demystify it.
This multidisciplinary panel will have the following members:

Early Career Researchers are invited to take part in a workshop on careers in conservation and environmental management. This new workshop and associated individual mentoring sessions is being held in Townsville and presented by Laurence McCook and Jon Day, who have decades of combined experience. The workshop will be run all day on Monday 21 November, then half a day on Tuesday 22 November. The mentoring sessions will be scheduled during Tuesday afternoon or on Wednesday 23 November. REPERIO 2015

Ever wanted to watch business ideas being pitched to real life investors? Inspired by the television series “Shark Tank”, the Innovation & Commercialisation is team proud to present “Reperio” (meaning: to learn, invent, discover in Latin), an exciting innovation pitching competition at JCU which challenges researchers to take that next step and develop their research ideas into business ideas that impact society!

The competition will involve selected teams pitching to a panel of real life investors and entrepreneurs, with a share of $10,000 up for grabs for the best ideas!
We have received tremendous interest in the competition and have now closed entries however, you can still be a part of our audience and support the JCU teams involved!

Calling all post-grad students, early-career scientific researchers, mathematicians and engineers… FameLab Australia wants you!

FameLab is an international science communications competition that puts science on the world stage, while giving young scientists the opportunity to learn presentation and communications skills that will allow them to tell their research stories to any audience.

Last year we heard about migrating bees, worm spit, acidic oceans, carbon fibre cars and exercise for prostate health… who knows what stories of scientific research will catch the imagination of the judges and show off Australia’s latest breaking developments.

The national competition is open to anyone with peer-reviewed research in science, maths or engineering. Throughout March and April 2015, state heats will be held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle, where the major national final will be held in May. Ten national finalists will be given two days’ training with FameLab Head Trainer, UK-based Malcolm Love, before taking the stage to ‘battle it out’ for the title of FameLab Australia national winner and the chance to travel to the UK to represent Australia in the International FameLab finals at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival.

Are you a young scientist with a passion for communicating your research?

To mark 40 years of The Science Show, Top 5 under 40 is an exciting initiative to discover Australia’s new generation of science thinkers – and give them a voice.We know about the struggles of young researchers to get a foothold in Australia. This project aims to highlight the value and potential of our talented younger scientists.

We’re looking for outstanding early-career researchers aged under 40 working in Australian universities and research organisations across the fields of science, medical research, technology, engineering and maths. A desire and flair for communicating your work is a must.The 10 applicants with the most innovative ideas will be selected for a two-day workshop in February 2015, coordinated by ABC RN. Working with the network's experienced producers and science presenters, you will develop your radio program ideas and pitch to a panel of judges, including Robyn Williams (RN), Professor Fiona Stanley (UWA), Professor Lesley Hughes (Macquarie) and Professor Merlin Crossley (UNSW). The five winners – our Top 5 under 40 – will undertake a 10-day media program as 'Scientists in Residence' at RN’s Sydney studios.This initiative is supported by UNSW, one of Australia’s leading science and technology universities and ABC RN, the ABC’s national ideas network, in recognition of The Science Show, which celebrates 40 years on air in 2015.
