Super interesting scar tissue in the hindlimb of this gelding!

Unsure of the exact cause of the extensive scarring (suspecting was caught in a fence or on a walker at some point), however we can see that the lump is very mobile.

At first glance it appears as if it may be bony, however it is easily manoeuvrable under hand suggesting that it is a massive amount of scar tissue under the skin.

Obviously, the only way to know is x-rays and ultrasound to determine the exact makeup of this lump.

Currently this horse has full range of motion in the fetlock and is sound (today was an initial post-purchase check over for any concerns, which fortunately there weren’t any of) so while it is an interesting finding it is not currently considered clinically relevant 🐴

Compare the left and right scapular stability of this horse - what do you notice?

We can see that when the left forelimb is weight bearing the thoracic sling is working effectively to maintain the scapula’s position against the thoracic cage (normal function).

When we see the right forelimb in weight bearing the scapula falls away from the thoracic cage creating a ‘winging’ appearance (weak/dysfunctional).

Now, if we consider that this is a horse standing statically with only its body weight and it appears weak let’s think about what will happen if we add external load such as a rider, force from landing in jumps or even trot/canter work. Considering this, it’s essential we improve this strength for the biomechanical soundness of this horse.

The good news is this is typically simple to fix with a targeted physio program.

If your horse looks like this reach out to book an assessment so we can restore strength and get you back on track for your goals.

Side stretches to activate the deep core and spinal musculature plus neck stretches for the deep cervical musculature - a nice easy routine to warm your horse up before work 🐎

If you notice your horse has difficulty bending to one side more than the other or seems uncomfortable doing it, consult your equine healthcare professional to assess why that might be.
