Pinas: Philippine Studies Network in Australia

Pinas: Philippine Studies Network in Australia This is the official page of Philippine Studies Network Australia (PINAS). PINAS will conduct regular meetings and academic gatherings.

Filipinos and Filipino-Australians are now the fifth largest migrant group with around 236,000 residents according to the 2016 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Data from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection shows that in 2015-2016 eight thousand skilled migrants and ten thousand temporary resident visas (students, contract workers) from the Philippines were approved. A

ustralia and the Philippines have maintained 70 years of diplomatic relationship, one of the longest in the ASEAN region. During the late 1800s, Filipinos pearl divers, known as โ€œManila Menโ€ had also arrived in this island-continent and intermarried with Indigenous Australians. Every year, Australia welcomes around 400 postgraduate research, coursework, and training (non-award) Filipino students and fellows. PINAS, Philippine Studies Network in Australia, seeks to contribute and examine this Filipino and Filipino-Australian community within Australasia. PINAS envisions itself as a community of scholars in the humanities and social sciences and in the interdisciplinary study of culture, society, politics, art also known as Philippine Studies. PINAS welcome scholars from all disciplines as it focusses on topics, issues, and challenges facing the Filipino community and society in both Australia and the Philippines. It aims to foster connection, dialogue, discussion, conversation, research and creative projects among academics, artists, activists, and the larger Filipino and Filipino-Australian public. It will respond to the problems and issues faced by Filipinos through critical and creative engagement both in digital and live venues. It will serve as a study circle for research and coursework scholars who are working on research projects or papers on the Philippines. PINAS will be a critical voice that will engage the Filipino and Australian public on topics of importance, such as migration, politics, community building, globalisation, culture and the arts, and the ongoing relationship between Australia and the Philippines as well as concerns on the Asia-Pacific Region. PINAS will aim for an annual Philippine and Filipino-Australian Studies convention of scholars, researchers, activists, artists, and community leaders and organisations.

Listen: Author-Professor Dexter Cayanes talks about how his book and dissertation, Tawid Diwa, was recently branded as "subversive" and "anti-government" by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino memorandum.

"Its prohibition to be distributed to schools and libraries in the memorandum is an attack on freedom of information. It impedes the flow of information and access to knowledge by people in general. I think it is important that we safeguard any acts of censorship by red tagging a text because it's a threat to robust discussion and discourse that protect our rights as academics."

STATEMENT OF PHILIPPINE STUDIES NETWORK IN AUSTRALIA (PINAS) FOR THE UPCOMING State of the Nation Address (SONA) by the President of the Philippines to Congress
25 July 2022

The Philippine Studies Network in Australia (PINAS) calls on all freedom-loving Filipinos and allies to join the fight against disinformation. The restoration of the Marcoses in the Philippines through the fraudulent May 2022 elections is just the most recent outcome of the massive disinformation campaign mounted by political elites to attack democracy.

Before the elections, the Marcoses and the Dutertes engaged in an aggressive campaign that sought to discredit democratic values, activism, and human rights. Social media companies, which have profited from the proliferation of content that ranged from fake news to troll attacks and hate messages, have done very little to curb this massive propaganda psywar campaign. Disinformation has led many Filipinos to accept the false myths of the deposed Marcos dictatorship, sow hate and divisiveness against those committed to social justice and human rights campaigns, and vote for politicians who ran on a campaign of deceit and lies.

Activists, academics, and journalists have pushed back against disinformation. But they have been subjected to relentless intimidation, harassment and even red-tagging. Armies of trolls gang up on those critical of the Marcoses and the Dutertes and keen to expose their lies. But these difficulties shouldn't let us lose hope.
The early weeks of the Marcos administration already reveal his incompetence in handling the socio-economic crises into which the country is plunged. Social discontent is everywhere. The mask will be taken off, and the real face of the illegitimate regime will be revealed in all its horrendousness.

There is no better time to continue upholding historical truth and expose the lies. A people's movement against fascist disinformation is already on the ground and will continue to swell in this crusade for truth and justice.

As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Australia and the Philippines, it is also important to evaluate the relationship between the two countries from the lens of Filipino diaspora in the continent. The aim of this paper is to critically reflect on the role of the said diaspora on the presence of Araling Pilipino (AP) or Philippine Studies (PS) in
the Australian continent. On the other hand, this could also be a study of the current situation and the future of this diaspora in the continent through the lens of AP/PS. The paper is limited
to tracing and narrativizing in general terms the migration of Filipinos in Australia and the experience of emergent scholarship in Melbourne, Victoria. Through this, it is proposed that
centers of AP/PS studies and programs are not neccesary to better understand Filipino culture in Australia, nor Australia itself through AP/PS.
