📢 What an incredible weekend at the 2026 Murdoch University AI Hackathon! 🚀

More than 40 students from law and technology came together to tackle a real-world challenge: helping citizens avoid, mitigate and minimise the impacts of scams and identity theft.

Working in newly formed interdisciplinary teams, students had less than 24 hours to develop innovative solutions, build prototypes, and pitch their ideas to a judging panel. The creativity, resilience and collaboration on display were truly inspiring.

Participants were guided by expert presentations from Consumer Protection WA and ScamNet, gaining valuable insights into the impact that scams and identity theft have on individuals and communities. They then used those insights, along with emerging AI technologies, to develop practical solutions to these growing problems.

"It was an honour to be part of the Hackathon at Murdoch this year. I met so many amazing, intelligent, humble, like-minded individuals who had so much enthusiasm to find solutions to our everyday problems."

🏆 Congratulations to our winners: 🥇 Team Low Tea - Grand Prize Winner for their application to combat QR code scams ("Quishing"). 🌟 Team Legal Byte - Winner of the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation Ethical AI Prize for their Rental Scam Defender. 👏 Team Statutes and Signs - Honourable Mention for their innovative solution addressing romance scams.

One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing law and technology students learn from one another, combine their different perspectives, and work together under pressure to solve meaningful problems. The event was a wonderful example of how collaboration, creativity and technology can be harnessed to make a positive difference in our community.

A huge thank you to our keynote speakers, mentors, judges, volunteers and sponsors whose generosity and expertise made this event possible.

🎓✨ Congratulations to our student F***y Michelin on receiving a 100G for 100G ("100 Grand for 100 Gals") Education Grant from the Perth Foundation for Women.
It was wonderful to see F***y presented with the award by Ping Teo, Chair of the Perth Foundation for Women. 📸
F***y is one of many talented women pursuing studies in criminology at Murdoch University. Programs such as the 100G for 100G initiative help remove financial barriers and create opportunities for women to continue their education and achieve their goals.

🎓 Real-World Learning in Action at Murdoch University
Criminology students in our Corrections unit are gaining valuable real-world insight through a series of guest presentations from our industry partners at the Department of Justice WA 🤝
On 5 May, Assistant Commissioner of Adult Women’s Prisons, Anika Smith, facilitated a powerful session featuring women who shared their lived experiences of their journey through the justice system. Students also heard about the remarkable Guide Dog training program 🦮, with meeting Elliot, a Guide Dog in training, being a definite highlight ✨
Throughout the lecture series, students have explored key areas including:
• 📑 Sentence management & life/indefinite sentencing
• 👥 Community corrections
• ⚖️ Parole processes
• 🧑‍⚖️ Youth justice
• 🚀 Career pathways in the sector
These experiences provide students with meaningful engagement, practical knowledge, and a deeper understanding of the corrections system beyond the classroom 📚

Law students at Murdoch University, do you want to level up your practical legal exposure?

Come and get some experience at the SCALES Law Clinic under the guidance of seasoned professionals in partnership with Murdoch University. Students will delve into a range of legal areas, including criminal, tenancy, civil, compensation, family, consumer, and traffic law at our Rockingham office, or human rights, refugee and discrimination matters at our Murdoch campus office.

This initiative refines skills in legal drafting, research, advocacy, and client interaction, while also enhancing communication, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.

Interested? On Monday 11th May 2026, Semester 2 Expression of Interests are open for the Law Clinics. Make sure you submit your EOIs before they close on Monday 25th May 2026.
