Pause is derived from the initial concept of ‘Ma’, the essence of Japanese aesthetic — the pure and indeed essential void between all “things.” A temporary stop in activity, this short break or interval can emphasise or clarify meaning. It is the belief that the space between elements of time or the interval between events is worth equal attention as the events themselves. This space does not sepa

rate but binds and relate things, allowing them to stand out and have meaning. The 2014 Graduate Exhibition places students in between the important phases of education and work. It allows us a moment to stop, reflect and celebrate whilst promoting ourselves as designers.
