Jajoo Warrngara

Jajoo Warrngara Jajoo Warrngara provides education resources and media co-created with and approved by 11 First Nations partner Communities. It's not just a book, or a story.

The Jajoo Warrngara: The Culture Classroom is a revolutionary resource created to help educators around Australia embed First Nations perspectives in ways that are culturally safe for both teachers and students. The revolutionary platform is a place where you can access place-based, community-led resources that have been co-created, designed and approved by the Aboriginal and Torres Straits Island

er partner communities sharing their Knowledge, providing opportunities for everyone to celebrate the diversity of this land's living cultures. It's a comprehensive, contemporary and dynamic approach that’s aligned with the Australian Curriculum and embedded with cultural protocols and depth, not just a blanket box-ticking exercise.

In this film, Aunty Vicki Taylor shares what a Welcome to Country means to her.

At a time when Welcomes to Country are so often misunderstood or criticised, this resource invites students to slow down and listen. To learn that these ceremonies have existed for thousands of years (long before Australia was colonised), recorded in early settler journals and even in Elders’ voices on wire recordings from the 1940s.
In the accompanying unit, ‘The Meaning of Welcome’ (Years 7–8), students explore:
🌿 The difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country
🌿 Why these practices matter today
🌿 How media and public debate can misrepresent First Nations cultural practices

This is a powerful resource exploring many perspectives, both First Nations and non-Indigenous, to help young people think critically, understand the facts, and reflect on why these practices exist, and why they endure.

What a privilege to work on the “Dunghutti Strong in Self, Strong in Culture” project 🧡✨

Delivered in partnership with Macleay Vocational College, guided by Dunghutti Elders in the school and funded by Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, this work came together over 2025 through time on Country, digital media workshops with students, filming across multiple visits, and incredible student artwork.

We’ve created two student-led animations and a series of short documentary-style films sharing lived experiences of growing up Aboriginal in Kempsey; exploring themes of segregation, mission life, bush foods, and, the importance of education.

We’ll be sharing more over the coming days. Teachers, educators and our wider community are invited to explore and share this series.

Honestly… it was spiritual. ✨

With more than 3,800 Indigenous folk from every corner of the world gathered in , there was an energy you rarely feel in other conferences. (And heaps more spontaneous song and dance 😉) 👌

Thank you to 🧡 for the opportunity to share our work and to learn from so many others doing powerful things in their communities.

I’m leaving WIPCE with new friendships, generous gifts, and a very full heart.

Thanks for having me on the socials takeover this week! Back to our capable team as I’m signing off to go relax in a geothermal pool in Rotorua. 🫶

Use the free resource to guide your class through sound mapping, yarning, and reflection and transform those insights into powerful soundscape art!

All downloadable from Jajoo Warrngara: The Culture Classroom.

From Redfern to the Opera House, Aunty Sophia, Aunty Yvonne and Shaunaya soaked up every moment exploring Sydney, before the opening of ‘Same Like Yesterday: Virlkuthalypila and Other Stories from Our Country’, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)!

These three, and all the Adnyamathanha Custodians have poured so much heart and culture into this story.
If you’re in NSW, go and see the installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, it’s showing until November 15, 2025! You won’t be disappointed.

And for teachers and schools everywhere, we’ve worked with the Custodians to create a beautiful suite of accompanying resources. You can experience the story online through Jajoo Warrngara, with interactive maps, short films, and a FREE classroom resource that’s perfect to kick off Term 4.

🪧 That’s Not My Name (Years 5–6, HASS, English, Visual Arts) takes students on a journey into the colonial renaming of First Nations places across our continent.

Through the Same Like Yesterday interactive map and creative classroom activities, students will:
🪶 Join yarning circles to reflect on how names carry memory, meaning, and connection to Place
📜 Explore original First Nations place names like Ikara (Flinders Ranges), Vulkathunha (Gammon Ranges), K’gari (Fraser Island)
✍️ 🎨Write and create artworks and writing that personify Country, giving voice to landmarks and the stories they hold

This unit encourages critical thinking and compassion, asking students to consider: Whose stories are remembered? Whose are erased? And what can this teach us today?
