What an incredible few days in Hong Kong as we concluded the visit of Mr Chris Freeland AM, Chief Executive Officer of CPA Australia, and Ms Rebecca Keppel-Jones FCPA (Aust.), our Chief Member Operations Officer.

The visit was filled with meaningful conversations with key stakeholders. Together with Mr Cyrus Cheung FCPA (Aust.), our 2026 Divisional President of Greater China and Dr Kevin Cheng CPA (Aust.), Regional Manager of Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan, they met with Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC), Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), AustCham Hong Kong and industry partners, to discuss evolving trends and explore collaboration opportunities.

A key highlight was our Hong Kong 140th anniversary celebration drinks, which brought together over 150 guests to mark our longstanding legacy and contributions to the profession. During the evening, Chris presented the 140th anniversary pin to Robert Lee, the founding President of our Greater China division, and connected with many of our long-standing members, past Presidents, and Councillors who continue to drive our vibrant regional community forward.

It was a wonderful few days to celebrate our rich legacy, recognise the achievements of our community, and look towards what lies ahead for the profession. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who welcomed our leaders and joined us in marking this milestone.

CPA Australia in The Australian on CGT changes

CPA Australia has challenged the Federal Government's proposed changes to CGT, in today’s front page coverage in The Australian.

As debate continues around proposed changes to tax settings, CPA Australia's Tax Lead Jenny Wong spoke with Matthew Cranston, Economics Correspondent, about ministerial discretion and has reiterated the importance of a system that is transparent, predictable and fit for purpose - supporting investment, productivity and long-term economic growth.

She also noted that the proposed changes seemed rush given her identification of nine ministerial determinations in the draft legislation.

“I have never seen this many determinations in one bill and that’s before we get to trusts, which shows that this has been rushed,” Ms Wong said.

Our message remains clear:
👉 Tax reform must be holistic and well-considered
👉 Policy settings should provide certainty for businesses and individuals
👉 Changes must strike the right balance between revenue, fairness and economic confidence.

We welcome ongoing public discussion and will continue to advocate for practical, evidence-based reforms that benefit the broader Australian community.
