Shout-out to our 2025 STEM storytellers! 📸

A thank you to all of our four Comms Interns for 2025. Their support of everything you've seen through January (our photos, our reels, what's yet to see the light of day) is invaluable, and essential to the smoothness of the program's coverage. They joined us in the room where it happens, and we couldn't be more appreciative.

Thank you to Freesia and Bridget for joining us in Canberra, and to Zoe and Sophie for the same in Brisbane. Direct to you from the comms team at the NYSF, we're glad to have had you on board – you're gonna go far. ⭐

What next? We asked STEM professionals about their journeys since year 12💡

NYSF alum and Energy Market Analyst at EY, Advaith Suresh, Research Scientist at CSIRO, Dr Ana Bugnot, and NYSF alum and Principal Research Leader in Chemical Biology at Griffith University, Professor Sally-Ann Poulsen shared their learnings on being adaptable and willing to embrace change.

"When you study, make sure you explore options because there are multiple pathways you can take."

"I love that I work in an extremely diverse team where everyone brings something different. In my own small way, I get to contribute to something I am passionate about."

NYSF went behind the scenes for Queensland's future of transport! 🚄

We became city planners for a day by learning how travel will transform across South East Queensland with Cross River Rail! NYSFers got exclusive access to the Albert St Viewing Platform, including a bird's eye view of the site and a VR display of the project. All with live Q&A from onsite engineers, and a test of NYSFers coding skills with the world's cutest robots!

Thank you to the Cross River Rail staff for hosting us and opening our eyes to the complexities of project management and engineering for our local railways. 👷

“The world is your oyster” 🌏

The Hon Andrew Powell MP, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation for the Queensland Government, joined participants at the NYSF Year 12 Program.

“We know that STEM is at the heart of Queensland's future. It’s exciting to think that tomorrow's scientists are sitting right here in this room.

Here in Queensland, my own department, the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation employs a huge amount of STEM professionals, some of the brightest minds in our state who are making a real difference to our lives as Queenslanders.”

Thank you to the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) for supporting the 2025 NYSF Year 12 Program – Access and Equity Scholarships, allowing young Australians from remote, regional, diverse and under-represented backgrounds to attend NYSF programs.

Hands-on multidisciplinary STEM! 🔀

NYSFers checked out microbiology, immunology, and light and particle-wave physics at UQ!

Facilitated by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC), representatives from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and 's School of Maths and Physics showed us tissue culture rooms and light physics using cardboard spectrometers! ☀

Thank you for showing us through these widely different environments and bringing us into your own worlds of research!

High-Vis must be worn to enter the building! 🚧

NYSFers toured the ARM Hub - Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing and UAP facilities in Brisbane! These sites are the home for purpose built machines, robots, and even where large art installations (like Canberra's new display Ouroborus!) are built.

We got a hands-on preview of multidisciplinary projects from autonomous systems and robots for ecosystem recovery, to bioengineering in health. Extra exciting – we got up close with a Wisk Autonomous Flying Taxi, preparing itself for the 2032 Olympics!

We're lucky to hear about the many hands that contribute to realising projects like these, including how important it is that Australian experts mind-meld in facilities like the ARM Hub.

Thank you to CEO Professor Cori Stewart and Mechatronics Specialist Dr Troy Cordie for touring us!

“Well-intentioned AI can have unintended consequences” 👀

What are the advantages and disadvantages of AI? What can we do to make sure that AI is created and used responsibly? What are some Australian contexts in which AI could be used to solve a problem?

Thank you to Dr Jessica Korte from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Professor Janet Wiles from The University of Queensland who led us through discussions on the ways technology can improve lives.

“We’re all science communicators, but none of us have that in our job titles” 🎙

STEM isn't finished until it's communicated, and the STEM Communication session in Brisbane brought together experts across fields in policy, education, science journalism, and marketing to discuss how to make our work memorable.

Thank you to ABC's Carl Smith, Sarah Stevens from Queensland Environment, Nicola Grobler (an NYSF alum with a heartwarming reunion 📸) from the Queensland Trust for Nature, and Steve Liddell, CEO of Street Science.

Sea jellies, polyps, marine research, and dolphins playing video games? 🐬🎮

Researchers at Griffith University immersed us in the illuminated world of colour and life to identify different species of sea jellies! NYSFers learnt about environmental population testing, the lifecycle of sea jellies, and what life is like for a scientist at Sea World. We also saw dolphins play electronic games as part of cognitive enrichment being developed by Griffith university students.

Thank you to Professor Kylie Pitt for sharing your knowledge with us and to Associate Professor Andrew Busch for inspiring us with the dolphin game systems.

"Your career can take you all sorts of directions – and the cool thing is that it can take you all over the world" - Professor Kylie Pitt

An MRI for an Echidna!?

NYSFers got hands-on with some of the most impressive (and uniquely used) imaging instruments in Australia at the Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) at The University of Queensland.

Researchers shared how their tools impact research into biomedicines, neurosciences, and more! We also found ourselves near some of the most powerful magnets used in their facilities! 🧲

Thank you to Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology - AIBN for showing us around!

Stars in our eyes (safely!) ☀

Astrophysicists at The University of Queensland showed NYSFers how to use solar telescopes to identify solar flares and sunspots. We were also able to see UQ spectrometers, tour the Physics Museum and watch the famous pitch drop experiment (Guinness World Record for the longest-running laboratory experiment!)

Thank you to Dr Gil Toombes from the UQ School of Mathematics and Physics for introducing us to the breadth of a career in physics!
