Multibeam mapping is slow in shallow water and indeed, Malletts Bay fits this classification quite well. The first image was accomplished with a full 10-hour day on October 1. It took 3 more days on October 6, 8 & 11 to get to the coverage map shown in the second image. Will be interesting to see what we get done today!!!

Another exceptional day for multibeam mapping in Malletts Bay. Took the first profile of sound velocity in the SE portion of outer Malletts Bay using the ship’s CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) system.

When it comes to controlling and monitoring the multibeam system , the sonar operator has 2 displays that have to be continuously monitored. The right hand monitor Is used to paint the depth in real-time where the reds/oranges represent shallow water and blues/purples are deeper. In essence, it rapidly displays how well the operators are mapping the bottom. For the highest quality navigational charts that are to be made from this data, no gaps (shown in white) are permitted. Wells talk about this display today and leave the other one (the master control) for tomorrow.
