On Saturday’s practical class, we performed staircase installation using two different methods. Students learned how and where each staircase type is installed, including measurements, fixing techniques, and safety procedures.

This hands-on practical session was designed to improve students’ skills and knowledge in staircase construction as part of the Carpentry practical training at Oxford College Australia – Bundoora Campus.

Well done to all students who participated.

Last week, we were at Oxford College, we performed practical learning on installing battens for cladding. We measured and marked batten spacing, prepared wall surfaces, checked levels and alignment, and fixed treated timber battens securely to the framing. We also learned the importance of correct spacing, ventilation, safety requirements, and preparing surfaces before cladding installation. Students participated in practical work safely and followed site instructions during the activity!!

Our students have been putting their skills into action by designing and constructing trusses as part of their practical training. Projects like these highlight the value of teamwork, precision, and problem-solving, while giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting.

Working together, they’ve shown impressive dedication, collaboration, and attention to detail—all essential qualities for success in the construction industry.

Hands-on experiences like this help ensure our students graduate confident, capable, and ready to step into industry with practical skills that matter.
We’re proud to see them building not just structures, but strong foundations for their future careers.

At Oxford College Australia, we believe skills have no gender — only passion, dedication, and ambition.
Today, we’re celebrating the rise of women in carpentry — bold individuals who are redefining what it means to build a successful future.
For too long, trades like carpentry were seen as male-dominated industries. But times are changing. More women are stepping onto worksites, leading projects, mastering tools, and building thriving careers as qualified carpenters.
Choosing carpentry isn’t just about learning a trade — it’s about:

In alignment with compliance objectives, a group of motivated students undertook an industry site visit to one of our approved suppliers as part of structured industry engagement and experiential learning.
The visit provided practical exposure to doors and window components, cladding systems, and other wall material solutions, with a clear emphasis on quality standards, manufacturing practices, and industry compliance. Students gained insights into material performance, production workflows, and quality assurance processes adopted by the industry.
This initiative focuses on industry exposure, skill development, and bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world applications. Direct interaction with industry professionals enabled students to understand expectations, emerging technologies, and quality benchmarks relevant to the construction and building materials sector.
Such engagements reinforce collaboration between academia and industry, preparing students for professional practice through meaningful, quality-driven learning experiences.
