As we approach Spring, it’s time to get out your gloves and head to your nearest beach or waterway and show it some love.
The Surfrider Foundation will be hosting beach cleanups over the coming months so get involved with our South Coast branch and join our amazing volunteers.
We collaborate with many NFPs in Australia that clean up our beautiful country. Kudos to the following:
Clean Up Australia Ltd is a fantastic initiative that involves thousands of community groups, schools, ‘not for profit’ groups and citizens who clean up neighbourhoods. We also have the brilliant CitizenBlue Depot where people can either donate to an environmental charity or get a 10 cent refund for each beverage container - great to see it featured in this video!! Another effective app is Snap Send Solve; when we see garbage, all we have to do is to snap a photo on our phones, and it reports it to the relevant local authority. The app has geolocation so it’s easy to use and informs councils of exactly where the problem is. The Tangaroa Blue Foundation collates data from clean up groups who send their information, and every item is recorded and sent to government.
Plastic waste is a HUGE problem worldwide. Australia is an island surrounded by 3 oceans, (Indian, Pacific and the Southern Ocean), and the Tasman, Coral, Arafura and Timor Seas. We get lots of washed up plastics from the Planet’s one contiguous body of water that acts like a conveyor belt of garbage and plastic waste.
Be Surfrider OCEAN FRIENDLY and refuse single-use plastics and get involved.
We’d love you to join us on Saturday September 17th at 9am at Sharkies beach in Coledale for an awesome morning of fun and beach cleaning.
