Debate Hunt - Inter-Departmental Debate Competition 2025 Concludes at CCN University
On the occasion of the July Uprising Day, the Department of Law of CCN University of Science & Technology in collaboration with the CCN-UST Law Parliament, organized the “Debate Hunt – Inter-Departmental Debate Competition 2025.”
The competition, which commenced on August 4 with 36 participants from the Law Department, concluded on August 7 with a final debate.
In the first round, the 36 students were divided into 12 teams, each named after a Bengali month. Subsequently, the best 12 debaters advanced to the second round, where they were further divided into four teams—Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. From these, six individuals were selected for the final round, forming two teams—Black Robes and Bar Benders.
The final debate was held between Black Robes, consisting of Law Department students Rifa Tasfia, Sumaiya Afrin, and Fahima Akter, and Bar Benders, featuring Law Department students Afroza Akter, Kumkum Saha, and Zahur Bin Shahdat.
The honorable panel of judges, including Professor Dr. Ali Hossain Chowdhury, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Mr. Mostafizur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Law, and Lecturer Nazmul Hasan Majumdar awarded victory to the Bar Benders team, based on their performance in the final round.
The closing ceremony and prize distribution took place at the grand event, with Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CCN University of Science and Technology, gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by Iftekharul Islam Chowdhury Siam, Director of Admin (Honorary) of CCN-UST, and faculty members from the Department of Law.
The “Debate Hunt” competition was mentored and coordinated by Mr. Shah Jalal, Lecturer from the Law Department, with overall support from Atikur Rahman Hafiz, President of the CCN-UST Law Parliament.
The final round’s topic, “The Independence of the Judiciary is Merely a Constitutional Ornament,” sparked intense discussions among the participants. The judges expressed that while the constitution guarantees judicial independence, its practical realization remains a subject of concern in many parts of the world. They pointed out that although judicial independence is enshrined in many constitutions, the political interference in judicial processes often undermines its effectiveness.
The competition provided an excellent platform for the students to showcase their debating skills and critically engage with vital constitutional issues.
