Today, department of Aquaculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, organized an educational visit to Karwan Bazar fish market involving the students of Level 3, Semester I as part of their practical class of the course Coastal Aquaculture and Mariculture (AQUA 302). The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with hands-on exposure to commercially important aquatic species.

The visit reinforced students’ knowledge of species identification and familiarized them with the commercially significant finfish, crustaceans, and mollusks commonly traded in local fish markets. By directly observing these species in a commercial setting, students gained valuable practical experience in recognizing economically important aquaculture species and differentiating them from naturally occurring capture fisheries resources. They were also able to compare different species with respect to their commercial importance, market availability, body size, and prevailing market prices as well as the variations in the size classes of the same species.

This visit served as an effective experiential learning activity under the Coastal Aquaculture and Mariculture course, bridging classroom instruction with field-based observations and enhancing students’ practical skills in the identification, comparison, and commercial evaluation of cultured and naturally occurring aquatic species.
