Nansen-Bangladesh International Centre - NABIC An integrated approach of modeling, remote sensing, in situ observation, socioeconomic interface in Bangladesh for Coastal, Ocean and Climate Studies

Nansen-Bangladesh International Centre for Coastal, Ocean and Climate Studies (NABIC) is a joint venture initiative between Bangladeshi and Norwegian partners established in 2011 with the vision to serve Bangladesh through advancing knowledge and sustainable development practices of the coastal, ocean and climate system and its impact on society by integration of knowledge generated by national an

d international partner institutions in the spirit of the Nobel Laureate and humanist Fridtjof Nansen. NABIC is a non‐profit marine and climate research center based in Dhaka hosted by Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) and operates as a programme of BCAS. NABIC is the 6th center within the Nansen Group of research centers worldwide.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Following the success of the last year first edition, we kindly invite you to the 2nd 4-days Summer School “Crash Course on Data Assimilation - Theoretical foundations and advanced applications with a focus on ensemble methods,” taking place on May 22-25, 2018 at the Nansen Center (www.nersc.no) in Bergen, Norway.

The 4-days school aims at PhD-level students and early-stage scientists with beginner or no notions of data assimilation intending to apply data assimilation as part of their research. The crash course will cover the basic ideas and concepts of data assimilation, focusing on ensemble methods, illustrated with real-scale / operational applications and with the aid of practical exercises.

Updated information, including how to reach the location and the facilities, will be progressively uploaded to the school website (https://events.nersc.no/summer-school-%E2%80%9Ccrash-course-data-assimilation-theoretical-foundations-and-advanced-applications-0).

The temporary list of lectures and (tentative) topics is given below:
Geir Evensen (IRIS & NERSC, Norway): Basic principles of inference and theory of variational and sequential Gaussian analysis, EnKF fundamentals
Laurent Bertino (NERSC, Norway): Background statistics, spatial covariances, anamorphosis for non Gaussian variables
Alberto Carrassi (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for chaotic dynamics
Yan Chen (TOTAL, UK): Data assimilation for climate prediction
Svetlana Dubinkina (CWI, Holland): Data assimilation for paleo-climate
Colin Grudzien (NERSC, Norway): Numerical exercise on data assimilation and dynamical systems
Remus Hanea (STATOIL, Norway): Data Assimilation for oil reservoirs
Harrie-Jan Hendricks Franssen (IBG-3, Germany): Data assimilation for terrestrial system modelling
Annette Samuelsen (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for the ecosystem
Yiguo Wang (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for climate prediction

The deadline to apply is February, 28th 2018.
There are no participation fees, but we have a limited number of 30 participants that will be selected by the committee.
Subject to funding availability, we will provide full or partial financial support for up to three students, based on the content and provenance of the application.

The participants will be encouraged to bring over a poster for presenting their research activities.

To register, visit the school website: https://events.nersc.no/summer-school-%E2%80%9Ccrash-course-data-assimilation-theoretical-foundations-and-advanced-applications-0.

Important: The crash-course is organized in conjunction with the 13th International EnKF workshop (http://www.iris.no/enkf/enkf-homepage) taking place on May 28-30, 2018 in Bergen.
Deadline for submitting abstracts to the workshop is 15th February.
Participants to the Crash Course on DA are strongly encouraged to attend the workshop too.

The organizing committee:
Geir Evensen (IRIS and NERSC, Bergen, Norway)
Laurent Bertino (NERSC, Bergen, Norway)
Alberto Carrassi (NERSC, Bergen, Norway)

The Nansen Center is an independent non-profit research foundation conducting basic and applied environmental and climate research.

Here is the link to Dr. Walter Munk's 100 year Symposium at Scripps 15-17 May, where Ola also gave a talk. You should really listen to Walter's Talk where he is telling about his whole life in oceanography, earth sciences and institution building. Please share it with your colleagues, friends and students. Dr. Munk celebrated his 100th birthday in May 2017.

NABIC Research Review Meeting held at NABIC-BCAS, Dhaka. Here two PhD Students of Department of Oceanography, Dhaka University and two from Chittagong University (IFESCU-1 & IMSF-1) presented their research ideas, methods and progress. One of them Mr. Nabir is traveling to National Oceanographic Centre, Liverpool, UK tomorrow for his computational research. Mr. Rupak and Mr. Shahin are going to NERSC, Bergen in July-August 2017. The NABIC Fellows were provided with new laptops for modeling works.

[ECOLOG-L] Post-doc/Ph.D./M.Sc. opportunities in plant ecology with Mark Vellend (original mail was from Tanvir Shovon in Foresterbd googlegroup)

With funds from a Steacie Fellowship, I am looking for motivated post-docs and/or to join my lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Sherbrooke, Québec, to work on one of the following topics (I am flexible in terms of details or different ideas):
- Using time-lapse cameras and field observations/experiments to study the response of plant phenology to environmental change over space and time.
- Meta-analysis and synthesis of plant community responses to
experimental and natural environmental variation (e.g., climate,
disturbance, nutrients).
- Climatic and non-climatic determinants of plant species range edges.

Start date would be January 2017 (or possible a bit sooner). Please send an e-mail to [email protected] for more information.
