Day 1 of ESS 261 Batch's Study Tour to Protapnagar, Satkhira.

Coordinated by Dr. Shahana Afrose Chowdhury, Associate Professor and Department Coordinator, ESS. The fieldwork is arranged as part of the Environmental Science course. The purpose of the visit is to give students hands-on experience with local environmental conditions, climate impacts, adaptation practices, and community livelihoods, enriching their academic learning through direct observation and field-based insights.

With an exciting schedule ahead, we look forward to a wonderful field trip filled with impactful insights, meaningful field engagement, and an unforgettable learning experience.

We are excited to share the launch of the book titled "Allometric Models for Forest Biomass and Carbon Estimation in Bangladesh" authored by Professor Mahmood Hossain, PhD, Head of Department of Environmental Studies and Sustainability at ULAB, published by Arannayk Foundation.

The book presents scientifically developed models for accurately estimating forest biomass and carbon stocks in Bangladesh. The book provides an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, and forestry professionals, supporting sustainable forest management, climate change mitigation, carbon accounting, and evidence-based environmental decision-making.

This book synthesizes the theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and national empirical evidence required to enhance the accuracy, consistency, and transparency of forest biomass and carbon stock estimation in Bangladesh. Reliable biomass estimation is fundamental to forest management planning, yield regulation, restoration assessment, and national climate reporting under frameworks such as MRV, REDD+, and NDCs. Bangladesh has a good number of forest types (such as mangroves, hill forests, Sal forests, plantations, and trees outside forests), so locally validated allometric models are necessary to reduce uncertainty and avoid bias in carbon estimates. This work traces the evolution of allometric model development in Bangladesh, clarifies key concepts in biomass allometry, and provides structured guidance on field and laboratory methods, model construction, validation procedures, and uncertainty assessment. A major contribution of this work is the consolidation of nationally validated equations for volume, biomass, carbon, and related attributes, offering a practical and authoritative reference for researchers, students, forest inventory teams, and policy practitioners.

On July 16, ESS students at ULAB participated in a seminar jointly organized by the Department of Environment (DoE), Center for Natural Resource Studies (CNRS), and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), as part of World Environment Day 2026. The discussions focused on strengthening resilience in the Ecologically Critical Areas of the Sundarbans and advancing forest conservation to support climate, environmental, and community well-being.

At ESS, we are committed to creating opportunities beyond the classroom. Engagements like these enable our students to interact with policymakers, researchers, environmental practitioners, and community representatives, strengthening their knowledge, professional networks, and readiness to address real-world sustainability challenges.

Last week, Dr Shahana Chowdhury, Associate Professor at the Environmental Studies and Sustainability, participated at the 7th Global Conference on Climate and SDG Synergies, hosted by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok.
Her research at the Environmental Studies and Sustainability program and the Center for Sustainable Development (ULAB) examines where climate change intersects with human vulnerability in Bangladesh, with a focus on rural–urban migration, coastal salinity and health, and community resilience through renewable energy.
One insight from the conference stayed with me: integrated climate and development approaches can make public spending up to 40% more efficient, yet 88% of SDG targets are projected to be missed by 2030. The gap isn't ambition, it's silos. The communities most exposed to climate shocks are the same ones social protection systems exist to serve.
Climate resilience and poverty reduction are not separate objectives, they are two dimensions of the same challenge.

Understanding Forests of Bangladesh, a session led by Professor Mahmood Hossain, Head of the Department and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, for the ESS students.

The session explored the significance of Bangladesh’s forest ecosystems, the challenges they face, and the importance of sustainable stewardship in building a resilient future. The session was part of ESS's monthly initiative to engage students with emerging environmental issues and perspectives.

On June 9th, the Department of Environmental Studies and Sustainability (ESS) at ULAB marked at our Permanent Campus.

ULAB students presented creative, research-backed eco-concepts to address real-world urban environmental crises through poster presentations and an awareness rally led by on-campus students and faculty, uniting our community for climate action.

A Panel Discussion was also hosted. Experts gathered for “From Grey to Green: Can Nature-Based Solutions Transform Our Cities?” to tackle urban air pollution and plastic waste. Moderated by Dr. Haseeb Md. Irfanullah, Visiting Research Fellow, CSD & ULAB, the panel included Dr. Md. Niamul Naser, Professor, University of Dhaka; Mr. Solaiman Haider, Director, Department of Environment, GoB & Mr. Arif M. Faisal, Programme Specialist, UNDP Bangladesh.

Let’s move away from concrete "grey" and embrace a resilient, "green" Bangladesh! 💚
