Development Economics is more than the study of economic growth; it is a discipline that seeks to improve people's quality of life through sustainable development, poverty reduction, employment generation, and social inclusion.

Bangladesh has achieved remarkable progress over the past few decades in poverty reduction, women's empowerment, digital transformation, and infrastructure development. However, our country still faces major challenges such as inflation, youth unemployment, income inequality, environmental vulnerability, and the need for greater investment in human capital.

We learn to address these challenges through various online and offline academic activities, including seminars, workshops, and quizzes. One such seminar, "Debating Budget & Beyond," was held on 25 June 2026 at IDEB Bhaban and was organized by the Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA). The seminar featured Mr. Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury (Ministry of Finance and Planning) and Mr. Abdul Awal Mintoo (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) as the chief guests. They discussed Bangladesh's current economic challenges and potential policy solutions.

The seminar also brought together distinguished academics, economists, and intellectuals who shared their insights on inclusive development, fiscal policy and the national budget, the macroeconomic outlook, gender-responsive budgeting, education and the labour market, industrial strategy, and other key development issues. Seminars like "Debating Budget & Beyond" encourage meaningful discussions on the country's economic priorities and inspire young economists to contribute to shaping Bangladesh's future.

As students of Development Economics, we are not only learning theoretical concepts but also preparing ourselves to contribute to evidence-based policymaking and sustainable national development. Such experiences enable us to critically analyze budgetary decisions and understand how they can promote economic growth that benefits every segment of society. Through research, critical thinking, and informed debate, we can help formulate policies that foster inclusive growth, economic resilience, and social justice. Together, through sound economic policies and constructive public dialogue, we can contribute to building a prosperous, equitable, and sustainable Bangladesh.
