The department of English Language and Literature at GONO BISHWABIDYALAY has been offring four year B.A (hons) programme in English Language and Literature with the approval of the university Grants commission (UGC) since 2003. From 2010 with the approval of UGC the department has started two year M.A programme. The department started with a view to producing competent graduate in English language
and literature. its syllabus gives importance not only to English but also to Bangali literature, Ethics and Equity, environmental science and computer skills so that the graduates can effectively works in various fields. The student of all the other department of GONO BISHWABIDYALAY have to learn the basic skills of English. Professor Terence Penherio B.A ( hons ), M.A. (USA) commenced the department in November 2003, we are proud of mentioning that, to train the teachers, Professor Zillur Rahman Siddique (former Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University and GONO BISHWABIDYALAY) was actively associated as Professor Emeritus in the department from the very beginning to August 2007. The aim is not to produce a narrow specialist, but a person who is aware of the historical background of his her discipline, who can teach with competence at different levels who is endowed with ethical/moral values, and who has gained a wider perception of literature per se from courses based on bangla literature as well, and finally one who has a good idea of the currently important gender issues and similar concerns of our time. tje competation character of the syllabus reflects all these facets concerns, including the importance of the liberation war of Bangladesh.
