Over 350 participants from all over the world made their way to Antwerp for our 14 summer schools. They immersed themselves in engaging programmes covering themes such as sustainability, vaccinology, energy transition, children’s literature, book printing, software testing, and much more. 📚☀️

Throughout these summer schools, participants tackled hands-on creative projects, explored the highlights of Antwerp through thematic city walks, listened to inspiring lectures by international experts, and visited companies, labs, and museums. There was also room for connection and relaxation: an international quiz, a warm welcome reception at Antwerp’s iconic City Hall, and a visit to the Port House created unforgettable moments. 🚶‍♂️🅰️

A sincere thank you to all partners, participants, and organisers who made these first weeks such a success. With a record number of attendees, you brought vibrant energy to our campuses. It’s wonderful to see how strangers become friends in just one week, leaving our university with new knowledge, skills, and lifelong connections. 🤩

Today, I’m joined by Lucie Kwizera, a 34-year-old international student currently pursuing a two-year Master’s in Epidemiology. Moving to a new country for studies is an exciting journey, but it also comes with challenges, adapting to a different culture, finding your place in a new academic system, and, of course, dealing with homesickness. At 2025, the documentary “The Wonder Down Under – A Dive into the Vaginal Microbiome” will premiere. It’s a production by Nina Landau and AD Productions, in collaboration with Sarah Lebeer, Sarah Ahannach, and LAMB (Laboratory of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology).

🦠 This film takes you on a fascinating journey through the hidden world of the va**na and its microorganisms, each telling a unique story about a woman’s life.

Hetty Helsmoortel and Lieven Scheire will be presented with this year’s honorary degree for General Merit by UAntwerp.
As science watchers, they make science news accessible and appealing to a wide audience, for example through Nerdland.
They work closely with researchers and give them a voice.
Strong science communication, they say, is mainly about a compelling story. How you tell that story is up to you.
