VŠMU - Academy of Performing Arts (Slovakia)

Together, these institutions collaborate around the common objective of jointly promoting high-level education, innovation and research activities in the multidisciplinary field of Film and Media Arts and, through this collaboration, consolidate the central role of Europe as a world leader in the creative fields. 🇸🇰 The FilmEU Ideation Week 2026 has kicked off in Film & Television Faculty VŠMU, Bratislava!

As part of the FilmEU Challenge, the Ideation Week is an intensive collaborative programme where students from across the alliance work in production groups to help develop their short fiction film concepts.

The week focuses on workshops, teambuilding activities, and creative exploration sessions, and culminates in a pitch session where groups present their short film ideas.

🎥 The FilmEU Challenge will see students develop 1-5 minute short films in collaboration with an NGO, while working within creative constraints and encouragement to film in local languages using local contexts.

We can’t wait to see what our students create in the coming weeks!

🎞️ Student and alumni filmmakers from Universidade Lusófona - Centro Universitário Lisboa in Portugal have been honored for their work at the recent CILECT Prize.

‘A Hora do Chico’ (2025), a dark comedy-horror short film directed by Rafael Sá Carneiro and João Severo , took 7th place out of 206 entries at the CILECT Prize, the most prestigious international award recognising the best bachelor’s and master’s degree projects produced at film schools around the world.

The film also won the Best Portuguese Horror Short Film Award at this year’s MOTELX Film Festival, which took place this September.

The short animation film ‘Mariana da Estação’ also ranked 18th out of 64 entries at the CILECT Prize.

The film was developed as part of the RE:Anima programme by students from the fourth intake during an artistic residency led by director José Miguel Ribeiro in September 2025.

Annette Jacob’s film ‘How to Download a Forest’ came 36th out of 93 entries in the Documentary section in this year’s awards.

🥳 We are delighted to announce the FilmEU Industry Summit 2026, which will be hosted by the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.

This three-day event is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, October 28 to Friday, October 30, 2026.

The theme of this year’s summit is Connected Creative Economies: Screen Culture, Innovation and the European Creative Economy – reflecting on the idea that the future of Europe’s creative industries depends on stronger connections between screen culture, innovation, education, industry and audiences.

🎬 A new academic year, a new chapter for FilmEU!

Across the FilmEU Alliance, our partner institutions have been kicking off the academic year by bringing students and staff together for short presentations and open days - showcasing the opportunities, connections and experiences that FilmEU has to offer.

From first-year students taking their first steps into higher education to tenured professors and experienced staff, there’s a place for everyone in our community.

🗓️ FilmEU Training Weeks will follow on 16–20 November, 2026 and 8–12 March, 2027.

🗣️ With the new academic year underway, we are delighted to announce the FilmEU Imagination Challenge 2026!

The FilmEU Imagination Challenge invites students from across the FilmEU Alliance to explore the future of film experience.

This year’s challenge focuses on a key question facing film festivals, cinemas and cultural organisations:

🔹 How can film events better engage a specific or underserved audience?🔹

Working in international teams, participants will respond to a real-world industry brief developed in collaboration with a European film festival partner.

The challenge is an opportunity to combine creative, audience insight and entrepreneurial thinking to imagine new ways of connecting audiences with film.

🇮🇪 Successful applicants will participate in the Imagination Challenge during the FilmEU Industry Summit in Dublin in October 2026.

📹 The student AV Team plays a vital role in bringing FilmEU to life, especially during our annual summits.

👁️ When not documenting the programme at this year’s summit in Brussels, the team turned the camera on themselves, creating a vlog that gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of their camaraderie and experience in the Belgian capital.

🙏 We’d also like to say a huge thank you to all of the members of our AV Team for their hard work over the past year and we look forward to seeing you again in September!

🔹 Join us as we take a quick journey through the 2026 FilmEU Summit! 🔹

🇧🇪 Taking place in Brussels in June, this year's summit consisted of four days of collaborative meetings, discussions, and exciting activities bringing the FilmEU community together.

Under the theme, 'Enact Change – Weaving the A(rts) into STEM', the 2026 summit explored how the arts can enrich STEM education by bringing creativity, storytelling, and imagination into dialogue with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
