Beyond Beauty, Beyond the Crown: University of Botswana Lights Up with the 2026 LLC Eco Conference & Mr. & Miss LLC 👑🌍

The energy is electric right now at the University of Botswana (UB) Indoor Sports Arena as the campus community gathers for the highly anticipated Living and Learning Communities (LLC) Eco Conference and Mr. & Miss LLC pageant.

Running under the powerful theme, *"Beyond Beauty, Beyond the Crown for a Greener Future,"* this flagship student life initiative has transformed the arena into a vibrant celebration of environmental stewardship, student leadership, and creative expression.

The conference goes far beyond a traditional pageant, serving as a dynamic platform to promote environmental awareness, confidence, and active student participation. Through stellar segments like the Sustainable Fashion Eco-Outfit Parade, heritage showcases, and intellectual Q&A rounds tackling real-world issues, our students today will demonstrate that true leadership is deeply intertwined with ecological responsibility.

Reflecting on the remarkable atmosphere filling the venue right now, the Director of Student Life & Experience, Dr. Barbra M. Pansiri, shared her enthusiasm: "The energy and passion displayed by our students tonight is truly inspiring. This event is a powerful testament to what happens when youth leadership meets environmental consciousness. By embracing this initiative, our students are proving that sustainability is not just an academic concept, but a lifestyle.
They are championing a greener future through creativity, confidence, and a profound sense of responsibility toward our planet."

As an institution committed to holistic development and impactful community engagement, the LLC Eco Conference directly mirrors critical global frameworks. It champions Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles by highlighting community citizenship, operationalising environmental action, and fostering inclusive social empowerment and student governance. Furthermore, through sustainable fashion, awareness dialogue, and community mobilization, the event actively addresses Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Climate Action, Quality Education, and Responsible Consumption and Production.

The arena is currently abuzz with incredible performances, cultural displays, and nail-biting competition as the top finalists vie for the crown.

Stay tuned to our page for live updates and the crowning of the new Mr. & Miss LLC! ✨🏆

✨ “Power in the Words”

Ms. Dzene Makhwade-Seboni, CEO of Mascom:

"Do not simply consume technology, create with it. Do not simply inherit knowledge, extend it. And do not merely imagine the future, help build it."

HE IS NOW DR ROY SESANA

Dr Roy Sesana is an indigenous rights activist born on 17 September 1929 in Molapo in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). He co-founded First People of the Kalahari (FPK) with John Hardbattke in 1991 and became its chairperson in 1995, championing the rights of indigenous communities to remain on their ancestral land and preserve their traditional way of life and cultural heritage.

Dr Sesana played a leading role in challenging the relocation of CKGR communities to New Xade and Kaudwane. In 2002, his organisation took the Government of Botswana to court, resulting in a landmark 2006 High Court ruling that the evictions were unlawful and unconstitutional. His advocacy earned him the Right Livelihood Award in December 2005 for his resolute resistance to the displacement of indigenous communities and his defence of their traditional way of life.

In January 2016, Dr Sesana was employed by the Ghanzi District Council as a Community Liaison Officer and appointed chairperson of the CKGR Consultative Committee, coordinating projects and service delivery for affected communities. His work has remained central to advocating for indigenous rights, access to essential services and the preservation of cultural identity.
