It is with the most profound sadness that the faculty, staff and students of the University of Belize School of Medicine learned of the passing of Dr. Cecilio Eck, Consultant Paediatrician. First we extend our deepest condolences to Mrs. Lysette Eck, their three children, their close and extended family and friends.

Almost as much as we mourn his loss for his family and friends, we mourn his loss to the medical profession of Belize. We mourn his loss for the children of Belize who will never meet Dr Shrek and we mourn his loss for our present and future students who will never meet and learn from the most exemplary of practitioners of this both ancient and modern art and science.

You have left a chasm in our hearts and minds, but you have also left us your shining, caring, fun example of how to be good human beings and good doctors.

Our future doctors were excited to participate in the Virtual Anatomy Board Training—equipping faculty and students with cutting-edge tools to enhance teaching, learning, and clinical understanding.

Stay tuned for the official Handover Ceremony of the ASCLEPIUS Digital Anatomy Table to the University of Belize from the people of Taiwan, happening tomorrow at 10:00 AM at the UBSoM.

The University of Belize School of Medicine is on the move in the north!

Following a recent recruitment visit, UBSoM was proud to return—this time as a featured participant in Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College’s Open Day.

UBSoM was actively engaged with CEMJC students alongside visiting primary and high school students from across the Corozal and Orange Walk districts.

From interactive health education posters and anatomy games for younger students, to brochures highlighting opportunities within our medical program, the team created an experience that connected with learners at every level.

We were also pleased to contribute an electronic blood pressure monitor to the event’s raffle.

Our mission goes beyond recruitment—we’re here making an impact:
✔️ Conducting health checks
✔️ Providing specialist consultations and referrals where needed
✔️ Promoting awareness on Tuberculosis
✔️ Continuing data collection for our hypertension study
