The Military History Group

The Military History Group The Military History Group at the University of Calgary is a group of historians who engage in and foster teaching and research in military history.

The Military History Group at the University of Calgary has been around for more than a decade. It is a group of historians who are engaged in and seek to foster teaching and research in military history and the diplomatic aspects of war. Members of the group practice and support history that seeks to understand and explain the causes, courses and outcomes of wars and conflicts across both time an

d continents. Whilst members of the group frequently draw on and value ‘new’ approaches in military history, their focus is on the gaining and promoting of an understanding of why wars have started, how they have been conducted, and how they have been resolved. The aim of this page is to showcase the work of members of the group both present and past, highlight opportunities to study military history at the University of Calgary, strengthen links between the group and the world outside the university, and generally promote interest in and the study of the sort of military history described above.

The Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies, University of Calgary with the Military Museum have been having a series of public talks on key security issues facing Canada. On November 23 2023, I was privilege to have been able to share my thoughts on the changing Nuclear Weapons international security environment. We are seeing a massive modernization of the deterrent forces of all of the major nuclear powers. But even more troubling is the emerging warheads and delivery systems that can be thought of as being war-fighting. So moving forward in an increasingly dangerous international great power system, what does it mean? In an attempt to answer this, my talk was titled "Thinking about the Unthinkable: The Modernization of Nuclear Weapons and their Delivery Systems".
