Happy National Indigenous History Month! is proud to commemorate and honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples who are part of our community and beyond.

This month, we are encouraged to learn about the diverse communities, cultures, languages, and worldviews of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and celebrate the invaluable contributions and gifts of Indigenous Peoples of today and throughout history.

We encourage our campus community to use this time to confront Canada’s colonial past and recognize the persistent systemic discrimination faced by Indigenous families and communities. Let’s reflect on these realities and consider how we can actively contribute to reconciliation every day.

Join us throughout the month as we share stories, resources and initiatives to foster understanding and promote Decolonization, Indigenization and Reconciliation.

Jeremy Wright, B.Comm. '16, discovered his path to becoming a successful business owner through studying management economics and finance at . Originally drawn to the program to better understand how economics can impact small businesses, he appreciated the flexibility that the program offered which allowed him to explore his interests in entrepreneurship and sustainability while developing foundational business knowledge and collaborative skills.

Today, he is the co-owner of ZinCo Canada, a green roof supply company that designs, consults and builds complex roof spaces across Canada — a company that he manages alongside fellow U of G alum and teammate Jordan Hofstra, whom he met while playing on the 2016 Gryphons men's rugby team that captured the OUA championship title.

From the hitting the books to hitting the ice, Katherine Heard is leaving her mark at both on and off the ice. 🧊

Named the W.F. Sportswoman of the Year, she was recognized for her work as a mentor in the Student-Athlete Mentor Program (SAM) which pairs first-year student-athletes with upper-year students to help them navigate the challenges of balancing their athletic, personal and academic life.

Though a campus tour confirmed that U of G felt like home, it was the Gryphons women’s hockey program that first drew her to the University. In her final year as a Gryphon, Heard stepped into the role of captain, where her motivation and leadership played a pivotal role in the team’s success. From scoring the winning goal of the McCaw Cup provincial championship in front of a sold-out arena, to being named OUA West MVP and a first-team all-star, Heard arguably saved the best for last.

A new study published in BioScience, co-authored by U of G researcher Dr. Faisal Moola, argues that the traditional stewardship practices of Indigenous Peoples are critical for conservation. His research highlights how Indigenous Peoples interaction with nature serves numerous benefits for biodiversity in Canadian ecosystems.

Dr. Moola talks about the practices that support culturally important species, and warns that current western conservation systems overlook or obstruct these practices. Addressing this gap could lead to more effective and equitable biodiversity governance, researchers say.
