PSYO 4001: Science of Communication is ideal preparation for students interested in speech-language pathology, audiology, neuroscience, aging, and clinical research.
PSYO 4001 will provide you with an in-depth exploration of typical and impaired communication, swallowing, and hearing, focusing on characteristics of these processes, causes of impairments and their impact on individuals and society. The course covers a range of topics, including the anatomy and physiology of the speech, language, swallowing, and auditory systems, the nature of various communication, swallowing, and hearing impairments, and common causes. Emphasis is placed on understanding the lived experiences of older individuals with communication, swallowing, and hearing impairments, as well as the implications for participation in society and accessing appropriate healthcare.
Pre-requisites:
PSYO/NESC 2470: Systems Neuroscience, or
PHYL 2041: Human Neurophysiology, or
PSYO/NESC 2150: Perceptual Processes
All prerequisite courses must have a grade of B- or better.
