PSYO 4001: Science of Communication is ideal preparation for students interested in speech-language pathology, audiology, neuroscience, aging, and clinical research.

PSYO 4001 will provide you with an in-depth exploration of typical and impaired communication, swallowing, and hearing, focusing on characteristics of these processes, causes of impairments and their impact on individuals and society. The course covers a range of topics, including the anatomy and physiology of the speech, language, swallowing, and auditory systems, the nature of various communication, swallowing, and hearing impairments, and common causes. Emphasis is placed on understanding the lived experiences of older individuals with communication, swallowing, and hearing impairments, as well as the implications for participation in society and accessing appropriate healthcare.

Pre-requisites:
PSYO/NESC 2470: Systems Neuroscience, or
PHYL 2041: Human Neurophysiology, or
PSYO/NESC 2150: Perceptual Processes
All prerequisite courses must have a grade of B- or better.

Over 8 months you'll lead workshops, run lab and EEG tours, and mentor high school and university students.

✅ 15 volunteer hrs/semester, full academic year
✅ Honorarium provided

This summer, Sarah MacMillan is researching how limiting vision in one eye affects specific brain cells and the structures that support them.

Sarah is a recipient of a 2026 Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) and works in Dr. Kevin Duffy's lab. Her work involves investigating the effects of monocular deprivation on parvalbumin-positive cells and perineuronal nets.

This fall, she’ll enter her fourth year of Neuroscience with a minor in Health Studies. Sarah’s favourite part of the neuroscience program is the supportive academic environment.

“My lab classes have helped me meet incredible people and gain hands-on experience doing very interesting experiments,” says Sarah. “I’m grateful for this amazing community.”

Sarah’s career goal is to work in healthcare, particularly with women or children. She plans to apply to the Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program.

Find Your Voice. Find Your Community. Find Dalhousie’s University Chorus.

The Dalhousie University Chorus, or DalChorus, is a choir for all Dal students. This ensemble combines approximately 40 auditioned voices. Members include students from Fountain School, experienced choristers from many other faculties, and even some members from the Halifax community at large. Excellence, innovation, and collaboration are the hallmarks of DalChorus.

Congratulations to Dr. Drew Weatherhead on receiving a SSHRC Insight Grant to support her research!

Dr. Weatherhead will receive $279,494 over six years. The project is entitled “Learning in Context: The Developmental Significance of Early Exposure to Social and Linguistic Diversity.” Her collaborator on the project is Dr. Leher Singh, University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

We look forward to the insights this research will bring to our understanding of early social and language development. 🎉
