Karlee Facey was in the middle of a workout when she checked her email and found out she had won the King’s essay contest.

Her reaction? She ran across the gym to tell her friend, called her mom at work and, in her words, “actually started jumping.”

A Grade 12 student from Halifax, N.S., Karlee wrote her winning essay on Plato’s The Republic, exploring justice, enlightenment and the allegory of the cave. For Karlee, challenging books matter because “I don’t think there is any other way to learn.”

As this year’s essay contest winner, Karlee will receive a gift card to the King’s Co-op Bookstore covering the full cost of her Foundation Year Program books. She’ll join King’s this fall, where she plans to study literature and play on the women’s soccer team.

Congratulations, Karlee. We can’t wait to welcome you to King’s! Learn more about Karlee’s essay: https://ukings.ca/news/essay-contest-winner-karlee-facey/

Know someone who would thrive at King’s?

Through the Alumni Referral Project, King’s alumni and current students can help future students find their way to our campus community.

If there’s a curious thinker, passionate reader, future journalist, scientist, musician or someone ready for a university experience shaped by big ideas, we’d love to hear about them!

Each June, one admitted student who has been referred will be randomly selected to receive a $2,000 non-renewable award.

King’s has received an RBC Barrier Buster Grant from Rick Hansen Foundation in collaboration with RBC and RBC Foundation, marking the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour!

The grant will help create an accessible kitchen in Alexandra Hall by removing the everyday barriers that limit safe, independent use for all students—and these upgrades have already begun.

“Creating a space that more people can use comfortably supports inclusion and helps ensure students with disabilities can fully participate in the residence experience,” says Accessibility Officer Michelle Mahoney. “We are proud to be part of the national RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program.”

From May 18 to 22, a cohort of eight fellows gathered at King’s to learn the craft of photojournalism from industry-leading Indigenous professionals at the inaugural IndigiNews ReFocus Photojournalism Fellowship.

At the end of the program, the fellows showcased their photographs from the week and were presented with a certificate and wrapped in a blanket to represent love and support from the community around them.

IndigiNews publisher and ReFocus co-founder Eden Fineday told guests her mission for the program—beyond boosting participants’ photojournalism skills—was “to shower the fellows with love and acceptance and support.”
