ELIP highlight of the week: Reflections from a fully remote CO-OP position

ELIP highlight of the week: "That time I fell down a (research) hole and had to create a zine on how to consult manga and anime to fight my way out!!!"

Written by Kawmadie Karunanayake for ELIP's "For the Field" section, this zine is meant to serve as a Reader's Consultation for Manga and Anime. Karunanayake created this zine to "facilitate the inclusion of anime and manga when conducting reader’s consultation, specifically for adult patrons" (2022).

Karunanayake provides a well-written guide for beginners who may be interested in anime or manga but may not know where to start. Karunanayake's informative zine is also accompanied by beautiful illustrations that you surely won't want to miss!

ELIP highlight of the week: "To Teach Empathy and Fight Racism"

For this week's highlight we are featuring an article written by Laila El Mugammar. In this article, El Mugammar analyzes the services and book lists offered in two Canadian public libraries for Black History Month as well as Black Lives Matter.

El Mugammar's research of these two libraries concluded "that though clear efforts towards the inclusion of Black narratives are apparent in these libraries, Black History Month programming and the discourse surrounding it are shaped to benefit and mobilize non-Black Canadians" (2022).

The FIMS Graduate Library is now offering mini chapbooks of the 5th edition ELIP journal!

If you've been wanting to check out the most recent ELIP release, now is your chance! The mini ELIP chapbooks can be found at our service desk, and can either be borrowed for one time use OR students can request an on-demand copy of the mini ELIP chapbooks if they'd like one to keep.

The 5th edition of ELIP covers a wide range of topics throughout the content provided in the journal, so we would highly recommend giving it a look when you have the chance! :)

ELIP highlight of the week: "Online Content Analysis of Ontario Public Libraries' Sensory Programming and Service Offerings"

In this week's highlight we are featuring an article written by Bridget Moynihan and Sara Jessica Clarke. Moynihan and Clarke both emphasize the importance of sensory services offered at public libraries, stating that "these programs and services are important ways in which public libraries can work to become more inclusive spaces" (2022).

After completing a content analysis research in July of 2021, Moynihan and Clarke concluded that while "some OPLs are offering sensory storytimes" sensory programming and services in Ontario Public Libraries "remains an area of growth potential within Ontario" (2022).

Moynihan and Clarke do an excellent job of highlighting the benefits of sensory programming at public libraries, and offer thoughtful feedback for existing and future sensory programs. Let us know what you think!

ELIP highlight of the week: "OA isn't free, it costs folks like you and me"

For this week's ELIP highlight, we are featuring an article written by John Bryans about Open Access (OA). In Bryans' article "OA isn't free, it costs folks like you and me", Bryans challenges the mindset that OA is "a progressive movement that challenges neoliberalism and champions the public good" (2022). Bryans argues that rather than being progressive, "initiatives to mandate OA in academia like “Plan S” often function as blunt implements that wrest control from academics" and "would see academics voluntarily alienate themselves from their labour" (2022). Bryans successfully breaks down the downsides to Open Access, and why neglecting to acknowledge the amount of labour required to create academic documents can be harmful for both current and aspiring academic publishers.

It's that time of year again! The Emerging Library and Information Perspectives (ELIP) journal has just published its 5th edition and is now available to access on the ELIP website, which will be linked at the bottom of this post!

For those who are newer to the program, ELIP "is an open access, peer-reviewed journal managed by students in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Western University" (taken from the ELIP website). ELIP is an Open Access journal available to readers immediately after it is published, and does NOT charge authors a fee to submit an article to the journal.

The goal of ELIP is to elevate emerging library and information professionals through the creation of a publishing community for students, and by encouraging the pursuit of knowledge in the library and information science field.

ELIP is suited for anyone in the Library and Information field as the journal covers a variety of different subjects relevant to Library and Information Professionals.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be highlighting various submissions from the ELIP journal on our social media pages, so stay tuned for more information celebrating ELIP's 5th edition!
