Open all this week at Siskind Gallery

"Jellyrolls & Bellyaches" is an exhibition of an introductory painting project for Painting 1 (ARTS-1111-01) in Fine Art Foundation. Students were given a word prompt (chosen at random) that represented a mood, these ran the gamut of everything from joyful to morose. Using that selected mood, they then created an abstract collage using the colours, shapes, and movement they associated with that emotion. Next, the collage became a source for a large abstract painting. Students were encouraged to play with the acrylic paints push the boundaries of the mediums and to try an approach that was new to them. The results are vastly different palettes and tactile approaches to the painting process. We invite you to come into the gallery and let the paintings take you on a journey from the lighthearted, to the angry, to the subdued. The exhibition embraces the full spectrum of feeling, pairing moments of delight, discomfort, humour, and reflection in vibrant explorations of emotion through paint. Much like a jellyroll, which can bring pleasure at first bite, and a bellyache in the next, these works attempt to illustrate the contradictions, unexpected turns, and complexities in our patchwork of emotions.
