What does a war thousands of kilometres away have to do with your grocery bill?
More than you think.
Our food system is deeply tied to fossil fuels — from fertilizers to transportation to storage. So when energy systems are disrupted, food systems follow. Prices rise. Access becomes unstable. And the people hit first are always the ones with the least cushion.
For students, this isn’t abstract. It shows up in higher costs, fewer affordable options on campus, and growing reliance on food aid programs.

The issue isn’t just global conflict — it’s the design of the system itself. We’ve built a food system that depends on long supply chains and volatile energy markets, instead of local, resilient infrastructure.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Supporting local food systems, investing in campus food programs, and reducing reliance on corporate supply chains aren’t just “nice” sustainability efforts — they’re how we build something more stable and more just.

Because food shouldn’t depend on something as volatile as oil.

Students aren’t just “struggling to budget.”
They’re going hungry.
Across Canada, anywhere from 30% to over 50% of postsecondary students experience food insecurity — and short-term fixes like food banks were never meant to carry this load.

So why are we still acting like this is a personal problem… instead of a policy failure?

Our latest article breaks it down:
🍽️ Why student hunger is rising
đź’¸ How housing, tuition, and food prices collide
⚠️ Why “band-aid” solutions aren’t enough
🔥 And what real solutions could actually look like

Because students deserve more than emergency aid — they deserve a food system that works.
