Three UNBC teacher candidates are exploring a question at the heart of their journey to becoming educators: Why do I want to be a teacher?

Joanna Cole, Natalie Heinze and Sarah Sawatzky, students in the Bachelor of Education – Elementary Years program, have taken their learning beyond the classroom, using personal inquiry and research to examine the experiences, identities and relationships shaping their approach to teaching.

With mentorship from School of Education Assistant Professor Dr. Christine Ho Younghusband, the undergraduate students developed their inquiries for the 2026 WestCAST Conference, where they presented their work alongside student teachers from across Western Canada.

Now, they’re sharing their research and reflections with the University community at UNBC’s Teaching and Learning Conference, where they’ll join Ho Younghusband for a panel discussion reflecting on their why, their research journeys and what they’ve learned along the way.
