Visual Arts – Sculpture 2 - Triangle Gallery
Project 2: Modernist Formalism
In this project, students received two wooden toy blocks to observe and explore the intersection
of the two geometric shapes. They began by creating a series of quick thumbnail sketches based on
the blocks, selecting a few to develop into more detailed sketches. From these sketches, they created
a clay maquette that served as a 3D sketch of their final object.
Next, the students made a set of technical drawings to scale up the maquette and to construct a
wood-and-metal sculpture. To complete their work, students applied various surface techniques,
including texturing, painting, staining, varnishing, and Shou sugi ban (a method of scorching wood).
This project was enhanced by students’ research into 20th
-century Modernist Formalism, in which
they considered a formalist artist and a work that would help advance their ideas

On May 8th our Visual Arts students will be celebrating the conclusion of their program at the vernissage for the Graduation Exhibition in the Agora of John Abbott College. In preparation, students were learning about curating and the placement of artwork through making miniature mockups of their artwork in imaginative gallery spaces using foam core. Here are some views from within their mock up gallery spaces.

Visual Arts – Sculpture 2
Figuring Out Figures
For this first project, over a series of assignments, students produced a figurative sculpture using a covered armature with a ceramic slip-cast head. These assignments helped students understand the concept of an armature as an internal structure and its relationship to sculptural volume, shape, and surface, as well as basic two-part mould casting techniques.
As a source of inspiration, they reflected on artworks from Art History 2 (Renaissance idealized body/proportions/stance) and on images and poses from four Renaissance renderings of David. They were asked to envision a naturalistic, proportional figurative sculpture in a Contrapposto pose. Additionally, students added ideas from their own interests to place the historic form into a contemporary setting. In particular, they developed a concept to critique the ‘ideal’ toward another area of investigation (the real, surreal, fantastic, fabulous, political, contemporary, hybrid, dystopian, etc.) using ideas of identity (gender, race, culture, age, ability, style, etc.) to go beyond the idealized Renaissance body.
