Are you interested in employment law? Looking to gain oral advocacy experience?

The Labour and Employment Law Society is thrilled to announce they are teaming up with Workly Law, a Toronto-based labour and employment law firm, to host the first-ever in-person Workly Law Moot Competition at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law. The Workly Law Moot Competition will offer students the opportunity to hone their oral advocacy skills by arguing for either the employer or the employee in a moot scenario before a panel of judges. In addition to engaging with topical issues in the area of employment law, the Workly Law Moot Competition will serve as an occasion for students to network with leading practitioners in the area of labour and employment law.

The Workly Law Moot Competition is scheduled to take place in-person on March 4th, 2023 and will be open to students in 1L, 2L and 3L. Food will be provided!
A maximum of 8 teams of 2 may compete in the moot. Participation will be determined on a first-come first-serve basis. SIGN UP HERE:

Keep an eye out on LELS social media (IG: ) for more details and information!

*If a team decides to withdraw from the competition, they will assume the responsibility of finding a replacement team to fill their spot.

👩🏽‍🌾 EMPLOYER OBLIGATIONS 👩🏿‍💼

In light of Canada’s amendments to regulations for TFW, employers must now provide:

(1) Up-to-date info about TFW rights
E.g.: how to access info in other languages

(2) Access to healthcare services in case of workplace injuries or illnesses

(3) Private health insurance covering medical care

👷‍♀️WHY TFW? 🧑🏻‍🍳

Canada is making an effort to protect TFW because of their differing work experiences often due to:

(1) Language Barriers
(2) Isolation
(3) Lack of legal literacy
(4) Fear of reprisal making them particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation
