A workshop designed to teach students how to improvise Bulerias de Jerez with live musicians (open to all levels)
Part I (via Zoom) – Sunday, April 12, 4:30 to 6 PM: Bulerías is the heart of the fiesta, thriving on spontaneous communication between the dancer and the musicians. Alfonso Cid is going to lead us in understanding the structure of Bulerías de Jerez, breaking down its rhythm, different palmas patterns, phrasing, and key elements.
NB: This session will be recorded and will be available for five days after the event.
Part II (in person)– Saturday, May 16, 4 to 6 PM: Once you’ve learned the musical structure in part one, Yu-ling and Sabrina will guide you through foundational elements – llamadas, remates and marcajes – so you can bring your understanding of dance and music together while working with live musicians: Alfonso Cid (cante) and Anthony Tran (toque). Even if you feel shy, you’re encouraged to participate and support your fellow students playing Palmas in the process.
NB: This session will take place at , 284 Amory St. in Jamaica Plain.
This workshop is to help you gain the freedom to play with the rhythm and confidently communicate with the singers and guitarists transforming your dance into a lively, shared conversation. Bonus! You’ll have an opportunity to perform your “pataita” at the student recital on Saturday, June 13!
