Subteam Spotlight: Spirit 🎉🕺

When the vibes are down, the spirit subteam helps lift it!

Spirit organizes the theme for our toboggan and helps find/make costumes for the opening ceremony and throughout the competition. They are in charge of designing the patches for trading with other teams. They are the life of the party, doing spirit challenges and choreographing the opening dance, you can always count on spirit to bring the fun.

Want to have some fun? Call Spirit and fun is guaranteed! 🎶

Subteam Spotlight: Tech-Ex & Elec 🎮⚡

These 2 subteams work hand-in-hand to plan out the set and exhibition aspects during competition, ensuring our team stands out from the rest.

Tech-Ex designs and builds the entire booth for Technical Exhibition day: set pieces, murals, posters breaking down the year’s engineering, and interactive displays that make walking up to our booth feel like an experience, not just a poster session.

Electrical subteam is where you learn how to build circuits and electrical designs that can stand real-world conditions. Integrating electrical systems with the bog requires testing and problem solving, however, it helps us get more info and diagnostics from the bog. All of these skills assist in designing the game for our booth, providing an entertaining experience for other teams.

Different skill sets, same goal: a booth and a toboggan that both work exactly as designed when it matters most. 🔌🛷

Subteam Spotlight: Mix Design 🧪🧱

Every ski, every panel, every part of the toboggan starts as a question this subteam has to answer first: what actually goes into the concrete.

Mix Design tests aggregate ratios, admixtures, and water content until the mix hits the right balance of strength and weight then proves it with slump tests to check workability before anything gets poured. They perform compression tests to see if the data matches up with their ingredients. It is a lot of trial and error to make sure we come up with concrete that can support the toboggan to victory.

This year the mix earned us 1st place in Concrete Mix Design at GNCTR!🏆

Subteam Spotlight: Braking 🛑🛷

An integral part of the toboggan, without brakes the toboggan will not be able to race so this team works hard to ensure that does not happen.

Braking designs the system that stops 300kg+ of concrete going down a steep slope, in whatever condition race day throws at it. Pneumatics, system interaction, custom components, all of it built to make sure this system won’t fail. From modelling in SolidWorks to waterjetting, this team ensures the brakes work with all parts of the toboggan.

There is no room for error with brakes as one mistake can make a huge difference. ⚙️

Subteam Spotlight: Chassis 🔩🛠️

This subteam is responsible for the main component of the toboggan, the centre cog to which everything else is connected to.

Chassis/Superstructure designs the roll cage and body panels from steel/metal tubes, ensuring that the structure keeps the riders safe. This means running FEA simulations to find where weight can come off without compromising safety, then translating those numbers into something tangible.

Tube notching, welding, panel work, all these manufacturing methods help create the main component of the toboggan. 🔥

Subteam Spotlight: Steering 🔧🛷

This team is responsible for all the turns the toboggan makes on race day. All the mechanisms are due to the hard work of this team and their designs and tests.

Steering comes up with ideas on how we are able to make a several hundred pound toboggan to change direction seamlessly without slipping. Hours of CAD designs, math, and prototypes all to find the best solution that works together with the rest of the toboggan.

For the subteam that is heavily mechanical, you have to give that one to steering. 🌀
