Did you know UVic Alumni hosts a free online book club with lively forums and a new book selection every few months? 📕

The club’s next book, running May to July, is Eliot Stein’s critically acclaimed Custodians of Wonder: Ancient Customs, Profound Traditions, and the Last People Keeping Them Alive.

BBC Journalist Eliot Stein’s colourful travelogue profiles 10 astonishing people who are maintaining some of the world's oldest and rarest cultural traditions—from Cuban cigar factories to Scandinavia’s last night watchman to a man saving the secret ingredient in Japan's 700-year-old original soy sauce recipe.

UVic Humanities grad and Vancouver lawyer Sam Tecle advises employers on workplace legal issues, helping to settle disputes and avoid them altogether.

“I was drawn to employment law because it sits at the intersection of legal risk and day-to-day business decision-making. It offers the opportunity to engage with the full life cycle of the employment relationship rather than only responding to disputes after they arise.”

UVic double grad Kevin P. Bartlett (BA ’91, BSc ’96) celebrates the launch of his crime and espionage thriller Timebomb, May 13, 6:30-8 p.m. at Caffè Fantastico Specialty Coffees in Victoria’s Quadra Village.

Timebomb’s plot is woven around the real-life story of atomic scientist Henry Moseley, whose "highly valued" notebook mysteriously went missing from Sir Ernest Rutherford's Manchester laboratory shortly after Moseley's death in World War I.

Bartlett says his UVic degrees in history and physics were of significant help in writing the novel.
