For Dr. Kaarina Kowalec, multiple sclerosis (MS) isnโ€™t just an area of research interest โ€” itโ€™s personal. Growing up with a mother living with MS shaped her understanding of the disease and inspired her commitment to advancing research in the field. Her work now focuses on uncovering the genetic complexities of MS progression as patients age.

Canada has among the highest rates of MS in the world with Manitobans impacted in large numbers. Kowalecโ€™s research offers hope to healthcare providers and patients seeking innovative therapies to help slow both physical and cognitive decline.

In an old kitchen fridge in a third-floor lab, a vial of powder resembling salty flour sits. UM graduate student Nitesh Sanghai confidently holds it up and twirls it around. The drug, which he co-named Borsantrazole with UM professor Geoffrey Tranmer, is not a cure, but it is overdue optimism for a longer, better life for people living with ALS.

โ€œMaybe this molecule can slow down progression by two, three, four, five years. Maybe it can halt the progression,โ€ he says. โ€œAt least we can create hope so these patients can celebrate more birthdays.โ€
