💐Celebrating our students!

On 16 October, we gathered at the Geneva Graduate Institute to celebrate the achievements of our graduates across our three programmes.

From professors and student representatives’ speeches to the presentation of awards and diplomas, it was an evening to recognise our graduates’ hard work and share this milestone with those who supported them along the way.

To our graduates: congratulations on your dedication and commitment! We look forward to seeing where your next chapter takes you, and to staying connected as you join our alumni community.

How can stronger inter-regional and regional–UN cooperation enhance the protection of minorities?

On 17-18 September, the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Professor Nicolas Levrat, co-convened a High-Level Expert Meeting at Villa Moynier in Geneva.
The closed-door meeting brought together representatives and experts from the African, Arab, Asian, Inter-American and European human rights systems and the OSCE, alongside UN actors, academics and civil society.

Over four sessions, participants compared approaches and discussed:
🌍 Regional frameworks and mechanisms for minority protection
🗣️ The inclusion and participation of minority voices
⚖️ Enforcement and accountability, from monitoring and litigation to mediation
🔗 Concrete ways to strengthen cooperation between regional mechanisms, UN bodies and civil society

The discussions showed how diverse regional approaches are, and how much value there is in exchanging across systems.
The meeting is a key part of our research project on the Protection of Persons Belonging to Minorities by Regional Human Rights Mechanisms, led by Maria Immacolata Fico. Its insights will feed into our research outputs and, as appropriate, into the Special Rapporteur’s work ahead of his report to the 64th session of the UN Human Rights Council in March 2027.
Thank you to all participants for the rich and open exchanges, to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA for co-financing the research project, and to the Société académique de Genève (SACAD) for co-financing the meeting.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Frédéric Bernard has been appointed Co-President of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, effective 1 July 2026.

A Full Professor of Public Law at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Law since 2019, Professor Bernard brings expertise spanning administrative and constitutional law, human rights, climate and environmental law, and counter-terrorism. He succeeds Professor Christian Bovet as the Co-President representing the University of Geneva, and will work alongside Professor Paola Gaeta, who represents the Geneva Graduate Institute as Co-President.

We also take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to Professor Bovet, whose connection to the Geneva Academy stretches back to its very foundation in 2007, when he served as Dean of the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Law. His dedication and leadership over nearly two decades have been invaluable to our institution.

‘The programme has strengthened my ability to connect the work we carry out on a daily basis with its legal foundations.’

Mohamed Shehab is a Humanitarian and Protection Specialist at the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, with field experience spanning Libya, Nigeria, South Sudan, Syria, Jordan and beyond. He is currently completing our Executive Master – MAS in International Law in Armed Conflict — all while working full-time.

In his testimonial, Mohamed reflects on why international law matters more than ever in today’s world, how he navigated the programme through a personally challenging period, and what it has brought to his professional practice.

His story is a powerful reminder of who this programme is built for: practitioners committed to making international law count in the real world.

Fully online. Part-time. Academically rigorous.
