廣州體育學院始建于1956年7月，是華南地區唯一的體育本科高等學府，也是建國以來國內較早專門從事體育教育的院校之一，隸屬于廣東省人民政府。2008年6月以優秀成績通過教育部本科教學工作水平評估。目前各類學生共有8000多人，是壹所具有體育學壹級學科碩士學位授予權（含體育學全部二級學科碩士點）和醫學門類的運動醫學碩士點的在大學。是國家體育總局若幹運動項目的高、中、初級教練員崗位培訓單位，具有一級裁判員、一級運動員審批權。
