Marwa's Diary: From a Tiny Island in Africa to a Big Dream at SYSU 🇰🇲➡️🇨🇳

Today, on , we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the OAU (now the African Union) and the 2026 Year of People-to-People Exchanges – also marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between China and African nations.

Meet Marwa, a medical student from the Comoros at Sun Yat-sen University. Her father once studied neurology here. Now, she walks the same halls, chasing her own dream in anatomy and clinical medicine. 🩺

From learning every bone name in Chinese to finding comfort in hotpot nights with friends, Marwa has built a second home in Guangzhou. When doubts crept in, her father's encouragement and her professors' support kept her going.

After graduation, she hopes to serve underserved communities back in Africa. This is the power of people-to-people exchange – a daughter, a dream, and a bridge between continents. 🌍❤️

Listening to the Birds: SYSU's 100+ Acoustic Sensors Monitor GBA Biodiversity

For the International Day for Biological Diversity ( ), the call is to "Act locally for global impact." At Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), our ecologists are proving that nature conservation doesn't just happen in the deep wilderness—it happens right here in the metropolis.

By deploying over 100 AI-powered acoustic monitors across the highly urbanized Greater Bay Area (including Shenzhen and Guangzhou), we are drawing a dynamic "bird voice map." 🐦✨

Using AI algorithms to decode nature's symphony, we are finding new ways for high-tech megacities and rich biodiversity to coexist. Because protecting the planet starts by listening to our own backyard. 🌍💚

🎵 When Art Met Music: Celebrating Museums as Bridges 🎭

Last Saturday, for 2026, SYSU Museum brought this year's theme – "Museums: Uniting a Divided World" – to life in a powerful and beautiful way.
Our "Synesthetic World of Pang Xunqin" concert-exhibition became a living bridge:

🌉 Between Eras & Cultures: We transformed historical Chinese art into a universal language of music and movement, showing how heritage can be a shared starting point for dialogue.

🌉 Between Senses & Understanding: By letting paintings "sing" and patterns "dance," we created new paths for empathy and appreciation, transcending traditional boundaries.

🌉 Between Campus & Community: Open to all, the event united students, locals, and international friends in a shared experience of beauty and innovation.

This is the power of museums: to connect, to include, and to inspire a more peaceful world through shared culture. Thank you to our incredible student performers and every attendee for co-creating this bridge with us.

Qiaopi at SYSU |Dear You, Across Miles📮

Still thinking about the film "Dear You"? So are we.
Sun Yat-sen University holds something quietly powerful in its library:
a collection of real Qiaopi letters — home remittances with handwritten notes
sent by overseas Chinese to their families in China.

📜 1933–1967, from Malaysia to Chaozhou
Sent by brothers and uncles running a store in Southeast Asia
To their aging parents, wives raising kids alone, and children growing up without seeing their fathers.
They asked about health, planned household budgets, gently told children to study hard.
A few lines on paper. How could they carry so much weight?
Thousands of miles across the sea. How did they always find their way home?

In times of scarcity, one Qiaopi letter was a family’s lifeline.
💰 Sending money
🧵 Sending fabric, slippers, wool
🥩 Sending pork, sugar, even ginseng
Not just remittances.
They were the quiet promise that a father, a son, a husband — far away — was still providing, still caring.
The original letters are not on display right now.
But their stories can still cross oceans. 🌊
a sea of miles apart, yet never far from the heart.

Why would a top researcher from the Technical University of Munich TU München choose to come back to China? For Dr. Yang Hong, the answer is simple: opportunity, energy, and a place that truly feels like home. 🇨🇳❤️

Last month, Dr. Yang was officially appointed as a Henry Fok Foundation Young Scholar at the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong (IAS).

In our exclusive interview, Dr. Yang shared why she made this life-changing decision:

🚀 China's rapid development – "You have to see it to believe it. The speed of progress here is unmatched."

🌏 The Greater Bay Area (GBA) – A unique ecosystem where academic collaboration meets industrial strength. "Here, ideas don't just stay in labs – they turn into real solutions, fast."

🏫 Sun Yat-sen University – World-class students, dedicated researchers, and highly influential professors. "SYSU gives me exactly the environment I need to push boundaries."

🥟 Cantonese culture – Yes, she loves the language and the food! "Cantonese cuisine and the local vibe… this is a perfect fit for me."

Dr. Yang's message to researchers around the world: Come to SYSU. Come to the GBA. Work, live, and thrive here.

Echoes of Youth: Bridging Cultures Through Poetry at SYSU 🌍✍️

On May 12, the rhythmic elegance of Arabic verses intertwined with the evocative depth of Chinese poetry right here at SYSU! We were thrilled to host a campus poetry event as one stop of the 2026 International Youth Poetry Festival (China-Arab States Session), welcoming over 40 brilliant young poets, writers, and scholars.

Highlights of this unforgettable intercultural dialogue:

🏛️ A Legacy Continued: With a rich literary history that once nurtured modern giants like Guo Moruo, SYSU was the perfect backdrop.

🗣️ Verses Beyond Borders: 18 poets from China and the Arab world shared their original works. Professor Xie Youshun perfectly captured the atmosphere: "Even without a command of the Arabic language, one can feel the profound devotion... Hearts connected through verse are unbreakable."

🎓 Empowering Our Students: The festival was a vibrant classroom. From traditional Chinese P**a performances to our School of International Studies students acting as linguistic bridges, the campus was alive with inspiration.

In a world of noise, we found harmony in the rhythm of words. Thank you to everyone who made this exchange so unforgettable. 🕊️✨

Nature+1! SYSU Team Uncovers a Forest “Anti-monopoly” Mechanism! ✨

After eight years of research, a SYSU team led by Prof. Chengjin Chu published in Nature the largest global analysis to date of tree higher-order interactions (HOIs) 🌍🌳—using data from 32 major forest plots, 3+ million trees, and 5,000+ species 📊🔬.

Key breakthroughs:
· HOIs are widespread and can favor rare species while constraining common species, helping stabilize forest biodiversity 🌱⚖️.
· HOIs are stronger in tropical forests and weaken toward higher latitudes, offering new insight into why the tropics harbor exceptionally high tree diversity ☀️🌴➡️❄️.

Beyond advancing ecological theory , the findings also inform biodiversity conservation 🛡️—highlighting how protecting forest interaction networks may help sustain rare species 🤝🌳.

This work provides a new, global-scale framework for understanding how complex neighborhood dynamics shape and maintain forest biodiversity 🌏.
