The College of Agriculture was established in July 2018, jointly established by Zhengzhou University and the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It is a formally established secondary teaching and research unit of Zhengzhou University. The College of Agriculture is basically positioned as a research-oriented college integrating discipline construction, scientific research, and graduate training. It aims to carry out scientific research on basic agricultural theories and key technologies and high-level talent training around the national grain, cotton and oil security strategy and the scientific and technological needs of Henan, a major agricultural province.
The College of Agriculture consists of 2 departments, 5 centers and 1 research institute: Department of Crop Science, Department of Biotechnology and Engineering, Crop Genetic Improvement Innovation Center, Mutagenesis Breeding Innovation Center, Synthetic Biology Innovation Center, Smart Agriculture Green Production Innovation Center, Rural Revitalization Innovation Center, and Zhengzhou University Olander Industrial Research Institute. Four national and provincial research platforms have been established: National Key Laboratory of Cotton Biobreeding and Comprehensive Utilization, Key Laboratory of Innovative Utilization of Local Cattle and Sheep Germplasm Resources of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Henan Key Laboratory of Ion Beam Green Agricultural Bioengineering, and Henan International Joint Laboratory of Crop Genetic Resources and Improvement.
In accordance with the strategy of "cotton-led, radiating expansion, four major directions, and collaborative innovation", the College of Agriculture takes major crops, livestock and poultry, fruits and vegetables, microorganisms, etc. as research objects, and focuses on synthetic biology (mainly focusing on natural products), mutagenesis breeding, crop genetic improvement, and smart agriculture green production research. It builds an efficient and precise germplasm, variety, and technology innovation system, and forms an innovation chain of "theoretical basis-breeding technology-product creation-achievement transformation".
At present, the College of Agriculture has more than 70 professional and technical personnel, all of whom have doctoral degrees, including about 40 with senior professional titles. The College of Agriculture has a second-level doctoral degree authorization point in crop biology, a master's degree authorization point in crop science, biotechnology and engineering, and more than 400 doctoral and master's students. In the past five years, the College of Agriculture has supported Zhengzhou University's three disciplines of agricultural science, botany and zoology, and microbiology to enter the top 1% in the world in ESI rankings; won 1 first prize in natural sciences in Henan Province and 1 first prize in scientific and technological progress in Henan Province; obtained 32 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including 3 key joint fund projects), and approved the first national wheat variety of our school (Zhengda 181), with a research fund of 78 million yuan; published 495 SCI papers, including 153 papers in the first zone of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (26 papers with IF≥10), providing strong support for the construction of Zhengzhou University as a first-class university.
