HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: MAMA BETTY KAUNDA.ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF EDUCATION IN ZAMBIA
The institution is named after Zambia’s First Republican former First Lady – Betty Kaunda after Zambia got her independence. This recognition is because of her invaluable contribution to the nation and the good of humanity through sacrifices that brought about independence to the country. It is her rare determination, courage and ability to hold together fellow freedom fighters that emerged victors for mother Zambia to stand, sing, proud and free! Mama Betty was born Beatrice Kaweche Banda on 17th November, 1928 to Kaweche Banda and Milika Sakala in Mpika now Muchinga Province. Mama Betty Kaunda was wife to Zambia’s first Republican President Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda and the First Lady of Zambia from 1964 to 1991.
She had her early education at Mbereshi Girls, after which she proceeded to Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation where she underwent training on Women’s empowerment and worked as a teacher in Mufulira. As the First Lady, she was part of the many diplomatic visits and matron to many organizations yet she led a very simple life.
She was involved in many charitable initiatives and she received the Indira Gandhi Non Violence award for her efforts to unify humanity. She later died on 18th September, 2012 at age 84. Betty Kaunda University College of Education and Health Sciences was established to uphold the ideals and virtues that she stood for as well as honoring her ideologies of empowering humanity.
THE BIRTH OF BETTY KAUNDA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HEALTH SCIENCES
Betty Kaunda University College of Education and Health Sciences is a product of many years of thought by a team of dedicated Zambians with interest in establishing a tertiary institution by using Eastern Province as a launch pad that will eventually cover the whole region. The core focus is to offer training in the field of education, social and health sciences with the aim of contributing towards national development through knowledge transfer. Initially the institution has started its operations from Eastern Province basically as a launch pad, yet its vision is to be all over the country where people are in need of education. Strategically, Eastern Province is also aimed at targeting learners from the SADC region and other countries within its boundaries.
MOTIVATION TO ESTABLISH BETTY KAUNDA
The motivation to establish Betty Kaunda College is two-fold:
a) A legacy project to honour the former first lady and also;
b) As a contribution towards improvement of educational and health standards in the country with a focus on women and youths.
While there are some colleges that offer training in the province, most of them are not domiciled in the province and this has made education too expensive to venerable students as they have to meet administrative costs of hiring lecturers from other province to come and offer the services. The absence of such a College made it difficult for some students from the province to access higher education especially in the light of a shortage of accommodation at the public universities. It is with notion that as a way of paying back to the community in terms of affordability, accessibility with flexible terms that some Zambians came together to set up this institution. It is also worth noting that one of the driving force is the ever increasing number of youths completing school who can hardly get into colleges due to limited training institutions and also meeting students who are ill-trained who fail to meet the expectations of the industry.
Furthermore, the institution will collaborate with institutions such as the University of Zambia and other international tertiary institutions to deliver better and quality results for the betterment of the nation.
The focus of the Institution is to provide quality education to deserving citizens with ability to plough back their knowledge into national building that will last for generations. The institution has assembled a self-motivated team of scholars who will offer services as teachers, administrators and as well as carriers of the vision beyond the province.
