What do data centers have to do with global health? More than you might think 🌍💻
We are excited to welcome this year's ASA Programme team to the Digital Global Health Working Group at Heidelberg University:

Together, the team will explore how data centers intersect with global health, sustainability, equity, and mental health, while also examining how these topics are represented in Malaysian media.

MEDILARP is moving forward in Heidelberg 🎭🩺

Our working group leader, Dr. Sandra Barteit, facilitated the MEDILARP design workshop as part of the Wissenschaftsjahr 2026 – Medizin der Zukunft.

Through presentations, group discussions and hands-on mapping with post-its, the workshop explored how wearables, Big Data, AI and health data sovereignty can become tangible through an Educational Live Action Role-Play.

A creative approach to science communication and digital medicine.

Dr. Sandra Barteit () recently joined the REACH Hub in-person meeting in the Maldives 🌏, where colleagues worked together on the design and development of a future MOOC on climate change and health.

The workshop brought together discussions on digital learning, course structure, instructional design, and hands-on content development. An important step towards creating accessible learning opportunities and supporting capacity building in climate and health.

How can digital health competencies be meaningfully integrated into health professions education? 💻
During the Erasmus+ Staff Week at Riga Stradiņš University, our working group leader, Dr. Sandra Barteit (@esjbee) , delivered a lecture and hands-on workshop on digital health competencies and approaches to curriculum design.
A valuable exchange on preparing future health professionals to use digital tools critically and responsibly. 🌍

Congratulations to our working group leader, Dr. Sandra Barteit, on this important academic milestone 🎓
Her Habilitation presentation at the Wissenschaftliches Kolloquium der Medizinischen Fakultät Heidelberg highlighted the importance of sensor-based surveillance, stronger data systems, and more equitable representation in climate and health research.
We look forward to continuing this work at the intersection of digital health, climate, and global health 🌍

🌍 New publication from our Digital Global Health Working Group!

How does climate change affect health across the globe? And where are the biggest evidence gaps?

Our latest systematic scoping review mapped the available global evidence on the health burden associated with climate-sensitive exposures, including heat, temperature variability, extreme weather events, and air pollution.

📊 Across 199 studies covering 157 countries, the review found substantial health impacts across multiple disease areas, while also highlighting important evidence gaps, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and for underrepresented health outcomes.

As climate risks continue to grow, strengthening climate-health evidence is essential to inform adaptation planning, public health preparedness, and more equitable climate policy.

From Knutpunkt to Digital Health 🎭

How can live action role-play help us think differently about digital medicine, data, and society?

At the LARP Research Seminar during Knutpunkt 2026 in Gothenburg, Dr. Sandra Barteit and Dr. Julia Corvetto explored how role-play can support learning, participation, and reflection in research and education.

These insights connect closely to our work on ECLIPSE and the emerging MEDILARP project with Nadia Primc and Björn-Ole Kamm, which focuses on data sovereignty, wearables, Big Data, and AI-supported health data analysis.

Role-play can make complex questions more tangible, and open new spaces for dialogue in digital and global health.

🌱🇮🇳 Research in Action

As part of a workshop and field visit in Pune, our Working Group Lead, Dr. Sandra Barteit, visited Vadu HDSS to explore how climate and health research can be translated into real-world settings.

The visit included exchanges with health workers and discussions on the use of wearables, environmental sensors, and weather stations to better understand how environmental factors affect health in everyday life.

These conversations highlighted the importance of working closely with communities and health systems to ensure that innovative research approaches are both feasible and locally relevant.

Meet Yuerui Yan, Climate-Health & Knowledge Graph Researcher at Digital Global Health 🌍

Yuerui’s research explores how climate change affects residents’ health in Nouna, Burkina Faso.

By bringing together climate data, wearable device records, and contextual information into knowledge graphs, her work helps make complex climate-health patterns easier to understand, across time and space.

Combining digital health, machine learning, and graph-based methods, Yuerui’s research supports new ways of generating evidence for climate and health action.
