The research project "Musical Reception Spaces and Commenting Networks on Digital Platforms: Analysis of Music-Related Discourses on YouTube with the 'YouTube Comment Miner' (YTCM)" (Musikalische Rezeptionsräume und Kommentarnetzwerke in digitalen Plattformen: Analyse musikbezogener Diskurse auf YouTube mit dem "YouTube Comment Miner") has won the NFDI4Culture Music Award in Category 2. The framework, developed since 2023, helps to investigate music-related discourses on YouTube and systematically makes digital commenting cultures and global music discourses accessible for music research. Many thanks for this!

The jury explained its decision as follows: "The work of Christoph Hust's research group responds to a development whose framework conditions were only realized in the mid-2000s: the rapid emergence of a musical reception practice on video platforms on the Internet. The submission rightly describes YouTube as 'the largest music archive of the present day,' providing fertile ground for 'cultural dynamics' and 'aesthetic debates' that urgently need to be researched using scientific methods. To tap into the data generated in the process, the 'YouTube Comment Miner' tool was programmed, which, in addition to scraping and analysis, also allows for the protection of data privacy and personal rights through the integration of common anonymization procedures. The accompanying case studies on music from Studio Ghibli animated films and the computer game series 'The Legend of Zelda' convinced the jury of the usefulness of the software modules already implemented. [...] It can be assumed that numerous courses and research projects will benefit enormously from the planned open-source publication."

YTCM is integrated into a DAAD cooperation program for the study of digital music cultures with Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. Further collaborations are planned. The NFDI4Culture consortium is building digital research data infrastructures for the cultural sciences and supports projects that open up new approaches to working with digital cultural data.

Das Projekt "YouTube Comment Miner" (YTCM) steht auf der Shortlist für den NFDI4Culture Music Award für 2026.

YTCM ist ein seit 2023 an der HMT entwickeltes Analyseframework zur Erforschung musikbezogener Diskurse auf YouTube. Es kombiniert datengetriebene Verfahren mit kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven und eröffnet Zugänge zur Musikrezeption im digitalen Raum. Geplante Weiterentwicklungen betreffen u.a. Schnittstellen zu Kurzvideodiensten, Module zur Analyse von Musikvideos und die Diskussion von Best Practices gemeinsam mit der wissenschaftlichen Community.

Das NFDI4Culture-Konsortium (Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur) baut digitale Forschungsdateninfrastrukturen für die Kulturwissenschaften auf und fördert Projekte, die neue Wege im Umgang mit digitalen Kulturdaten eröffnen. Wir bedanken uns für die Nominierung!

The project "YouTube Comment Miner" (YTCM) is on the shortlist for the NFDI4Culture Music Award for 2026.

YTCM is an analysis framework developed at HMT since 2023 for researching music-related discourse on YouTube. It combines data-driven methods with cultural-studies perspectives and opens up new approaches to studying music reception in digital environments. Planned developments include interfaces to short-video platforms, modules for analyzing music videos, and the joint discussion of best practices together with the scientific community.

The NFDI4Culture consortium builds digital research data infrastructures for the cultural sciences and supports projects that open up new ways of working with digital cultural data. We would like to thank NFDI4Culture for the nomination!

English below ⬇️ Letztes Mal führte uns die Reise von Ozeanien nach Thüringen. 🌎🎶 Diesmal geht es von Nordamerika über Frankreich nach Preußen zu Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg, Musiktheoretiker, Publizist und Direktor der Preußischen Lotterie. In seiner Zeitschrift "Historisch-Kritische Beyträge zur Aufnahme der Musik" brachte er 1762 "Anmerckungen über drey Lieder der Irokesen". Seine Quelle: das "Journal étranger" von 1754 und dort die "Remarques sur les trois airs Iroquois".

Der Text bietet mehr als Noten, sondern die kulturelle Verortung in einem diplomatischen Akt: Das erste Stück begleite den feierlichen Besuch, das zweite den Tanz. Das geht zurück auf Berichte von François Picquet, der im 18. Jahrhundert in Nordamerika missionierte. Doch die Schilderungen spiegeln das koloniale Weltbild. Zwischen Bewunderung und Abwertung, Faszination und Vorurteilen: ein Blick auf die frühen Berührungen europäischer und indigener Kulturen voller Ambivalenz. 🎶🌊

🌎🎶 Last time, our journey took us from Oceania to Thuringia. This time, we travel from North America through France to Prussia: to Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg, music theorist, publicist, and director of the Prussian Lottery. In his journal "Historisch-Kritische Beyträge zur Aufnahme der Musik," he published "Remarks on Three Songs of the Iroquois" in 1762. His source: the "Journal étranger" of 1754, specifically the "Remarques sur les trois airs Iroquois."

The text offers more than just musical notation - it provides cultural context within a diplomatic act: the first piece accompanies a formal visit, the second a dance. This traces back to reports by François Picquet who served as a missionary in North America in the 18th century. But of course, the descriptions reflect a colonial worldview. Caught between admiration and critique, fascination and prejudice, they provide a glimpse into the early encounters between European and Indigenous cultures, full of ambivalence. 🎶🌊
