💜 Chronic Prurigo and Peripheral Neuropathy

Did you know that chronic itch can sometimes be linked to nerve damage?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are damaged. These nerves normally carry signals such as touch, pain, and itch between the body and the brain.

📖 A recent study by Eck et al. (2026) found that people with peripheral neuropathy and chronic itching may have a reduced ability to naturally “downregulate” itching signals in the nervous system.

Interestingly, the body’s ability to control pain signals remained unchanged.

💡 These findings suggest that a disruption in the pathways that regulate itching may play a key role in why neuropathic itching persists.
Understanding these mechanisms could help researchers develop new, targeted treatments for chronic itching in the future. 🌱

🌍 Global events, one shared goal: improving skin health and raising awareness.

Around the world, patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocacy organizations are coming together to increase awareness of skin diseases and improve care for those affected.

📅 From World Prurigo Day (June 21) to World Skin Health Day (July 😎 and World Psychodermatology Day (November 21), these awareness days remind us that skin diseases can impact every aspect of life—and that no one should face them alone.

We are also excited to see the dermatology community gather at major international events such as the EADV Congress 2026 in Vienna, bringing together experts, researchers, and patient organizations to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and advance skin health worldwide.

💜 Every awareness day, every conversation, and every shared experience helps create greater understanding, better research, and improved care.

Together, we can continue to raise awareness for chronic prurigo and support everyone affected by chronic itch.

📌 Save this post and join us throughout the year as we highlight important dates in skin health and prurigo awareness.

💜 Not getting the help you need? Here are some next steps.
Living with chronic prurigo or chronic itch can be frustrating—especially if you feel your symptoms are not improving or you're struggling to access the care you need.
Here are a few things you can do:
✔️ Keep an itch diary. Write down when the itch occurs, how severe it is, and how it affects your sleep and daily life.
✔️ Take photos of your skin. If your symptoms change over time, photos can help your healthcare provider better understand your condition.
✔️ Be open about how itch affects your life. Tell your doctor if it impacts your sleep, work, mental health, or relationships. These details matter.
✔️ Ask about all available treatment options. If your current treatment isn't helping, ask whether other therapies may be appropriate for you.
✔️ Seek a second opinion if needed. If your symptoms remain uncontrolled, another specialist may offer additional insights.
💜 You deserve to be heard. Living with chronic itch is not "just part of the disease"—effective management starts with open communication and the right support.
Have you found something that helped you navigate your care? Share your experience in the comments—it may help someone else.

🌍 Breaking language barriers in Prurigo care!
We are pleased to announce that the Prurigo Control Test (PCT) is now available in 20 languages.
The PCT is a short questionnaire that helps people living with chronic prurigo or prurigo nodularis understand how well their disease is currently under control and communicate this with their healthcare provider.
Why is this important? 💜
✔️ Complete the questionnaire in your preferred language.
✔️ Help your healthcare team better understand how your disease affects you.
✔️ Support open conversations and shared treatment decisions with your doctor.
✔️ Contribute to research by using the same questionnaire worldwide, making results easier to compare.
To make sure the PCT has the same meaning in every language, each translation was carefully developed and reviewed according to international standards. Patients also took part in the validation process to ensure the questionnaire is easy to understand and relevant across different cultures.
Making the PCT available in 20 languages is an important step toward more accessible, patient-centered, and globally standardized care for people living with chronic prurigo.
