Today, the Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) openly shared its views on the impact of inflation and shortages on students. DSW Secretary General Matthias Anbuhl calls for more government support for Studierendenwerke. Here is a translation of the excerpt on the left:
Concerted action: Prevent cost explosion for students, more and more aid for Studierendenwerke
"Rampant inflation is hitting students hard, as well as the Studierendenwerke. The price increases, especially for energy and food, threaten to put an enormous financial burden on students. The current gas crisis will massively exacerbate this trend. Higher semester fees, higher canteen prices, higher rents in student dormitories - nothing can be ruled out if this development continues unchecked. The federal and state governments must intervene, via stronger state aid for the Studierendenwerke and an inflation surcharge on BAföG. Students have shown absolute solidarity in the past four pandemic semesters and have done without a great deal. Their financial burden must be buffered politically […] Therefore, when the federal government develops economic assistance for businesses due to inflation, these measures should include Studierendenwerke.”
