TLU International Relations Society

TLU International Relations Society Connecting Tallinn University students interested in world politics, international affairs, and more!

The International Relations Society (IRS) at Tallinn University is an organization which welcomes anyone with an interest in our core areas of International Relations, International Security and International Affairs! We welcome and encourage great ideas from members and the TLU community. Please let us know if you also have access to interesting people who can host events for the society and the

general public so we can assist! We are delighted to hear about both ideas for events but also from people who have a specific background or a capable network, from where we can base future events. However this will always be done in cooperation with the members of the board so the board can best facilitate a certain level of quality for the organization as a whole. All students or alumni at Tallinn University have the opportunity to join as members through reviewing and signing a membership form. We encourage Estonian and International students to join the organization! The current Executive Board for the International Relations Society at Tallinn University:

President: Philipp JooรŸ
Vice President: Atanu Biswas
Communications Chair: Zofia Varipuu
Project manager: Anna Behrens

We are excited to announce our most anticipated event of the year!

๐Ÿ“ Online
๐Ÿ“‹ Register here: https://www.tlu.ee/en/yti/events/interview-polish-ambassador-moscow

During this discussion, we will explore what it means to serve as an EU ambassador in todayโ€™s geopolitical climate, gain insight into the realities of diplomatic life in Russia, and discuss emerging challenges in diplomacy following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Please write to us any questions you would like us to ask the ambassador!

๐Ÿ“ข We invite you to a lecture "How and why genocide distinguished warfare" with A. Dirk Moses, taking place on the 8 December, 16:30โ€“18:00, in room M134.

The lecture will explore how the legal definition of genocide was narrowed so that states can wage war against populations without easily being held accountable. Holocaust memory has reinforced the division between war and genocide. The consequences of this limited legal framework can be seen in many conflicts since World War II, including the current situations in Ukraine and Gaza. Understanding these key concepts and their functions is crucial to addressing this fundamental flaw in international criminal law.

๐ŸŽ“ Today, our IRS student society took part in an insightful session at the Banned Book Museum in Tallinn. We had the opportunity to speak with the founder about the politics of censorship: why and how books are suppressed, what forms control can take, and which works are essential for understanding these mechanisms.

๐Ÿ“š Each participant was able to find a banned or censored book from their own country, highlighting that censorship is not limited to one region or political system, but occurs in diverse contexts around the world.

๐Ÿง  The museum actively encourages visitors to support its mission by donating unique banned or censored books from across the globe. It has also launched a publishing series of known "banned" books, republishing selected titles together with contextual commentary to shed light on their historical and political significance.
