History
History of the Faculty of Commerce, Alexandria University

Faculty of Commerce was established upon the issuance of Law No. 32 for the year 1942 concerning the establishment and organization of Farouk I University. At the first, the faculty was based in one of Abbasia school buildings in Mohrram Bik. The study began on October 17th, 1942 and then transferred to Prince Omar Toson Saray i

n Ambrozo. It occupied a building in Lauran and then transferred to the building of freedom shelter (the old building of the Faculty of Commerce). The university had bought this building and set up two auditoriums, club and library to serve faculty students till 1961 when it was moved to its current building, which was established at theoretical faculties' complex on University land in Sotir. The study at the faculty since its start had passed through stages of development. The undergraduate study was going under the One Division System This system was then replaced with another one with the study divided into two divisions. The new system made the first and second year as joint study for all students and if the student completed this period of study successfully he had to choose at the third year between two divisions: Commerce Division and Economy Division. It had been taken into consideration in distributing the study materials between the two divisions that all studies in commercial materials are predominant including accounting and business administration with sufficient economic studies. For the Economy Division, the economic studies are predominant without neglecting pure commercial studies. This system had been applied in the faculty at the academic year 1947/1948 after the approval of the Board of University on 18 and 23 November 1948. As a result of scientific development in all studies and growing numbers of the students, the study program and curricula at the faculty were re-examined, so new specializations compatible with scientific progress were added. Also new scientific departments were initialized so the faculty included the following departments: Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Public Finance, Statistics and Mathematics, Insurance, Political Science, and Information Systems. The faculty awards Bachelor's degree in Commerce in one of the specialization disciplines which are mentioned in the faculty regulation, and Master's degree in Commerce, and also PhD degree. Since 1949/1950 the faculty started to establish Graduate Diplomas currently twenty Diplomas in different disciplines. Study duration is identified for a bachelor's degree as four academic years divided into eight semesters. Each semester will take fifteen weeks with one exam. The academic year result will be to the two semesters as one unit and the specialty will be in all faculty disciplines from the third year. The faculty also has established a set of institutions to award diploma in the specialization field take two academic years in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Public Economy, Statistics and Insurance Studies and Diplomatic Studies. These institutes seek to develop knowledge in its various specialization fields and to organize training studies in specialization field to serve the community and conduct research and studies related to specialization field. The graduate study system was amended to the credit hours system in the academic year 2002/2003. Since the academic year 2006/2007 the system was applied to graduate programs (PhD, Masters, Diplomas) in all disciplines.
